China trade falls amid weak demand, holiday (AP)

BEIJING ? China's imports and exports fell sharply in January amid weak demand and a Lunar New Year holiday break that idled many Chinese companies.

Trade data on Friday showed exports were down 0.5 percent from a year earlier while imports fell 15 percent.

That was in line with forecasts by analysts who expected a big decline due to the holiday. Chinese exporters rushed orders out the door in December and then closed for two weeks or more in January.

China's politically sensitive global trade surplus tripled compared with a year earlier to $27.3 billion.
