Big Risk? Try This Strategy

Thursday, February 28th, 2013
By George Leong, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Try This StrategyIn technical analysis, the chart tells a story. On Monday, the S&P 500 closed below 1,500 for the first time since February 4, driving fears of a multi-year topping, which I have discussed in the past. (Read ?Alert: Bulls Should Be Careful Despite an Impressive January.?) The Dow Jones failed to hold above 14,000 for the third time over the past several weeks. With the decline, the NASDAQ, Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Russell 2000 are back in negative territory for February, with the final trading session taking place today. The trading is similar to what we saw in 2012 following a positive start, and 2012 turned out to be a year of caution, so you need a prudent investment strategy.

Currently, we have the sequestration budgetary cuts set to take effect tomorrow. The automatic $85.0 billion in annual budget cuts (the planned sequester will total $1.2 trillion over the next decade), could have a widespread impact on the country and the economy, including program cuts, job losses, and chaos. (Source: Cowan, R. and Lawder, D., ?U.S. government won?t fall apart on ?sequester? day of reckoning,? Reuters, February 20, 2013.)

Face it; the country?s money printing presses are stopping. The Federal Reserve suggested the possibility of needing to reduce or stop its $85.0 billion in monthly bond purchases. The Fed?s bond buying has added further liquidity into the economy to keep it going. This has also been the case with numerous central banks around the world. The problem is that the monetary easing has created an artificial economy that?s supported by the printing of money.

Then there?s the political uncertainty in Italy, where the outcome of the national election could determine which path the country takes as far as economic reform. The concern is that Italy is the third-largest member of the eurozone, and problems here could cause more havoc.

Given all of these uncertainties, there is ample risk in stocks, and you need a good investment strategy.

You can buy into new positions and assume the risk of a market correction, but a much safer and more prudent investment strategy alternative is to play the upside via the use of call options. This would allow you to take advantage of any upward move in the equities market, while also managing the maximum risk you have via this option investment strategy.

Let?s say you feel the economic renewal will continue to drive auto sales, but you are worried about a possible economic downfall given sequestration and Europe?s economic mess.

You like what Ford Motor Company (NYSE/F) is doing and feel the stock may be heading higher. But instead of buying the stock outright, you can play Ford via call options to add leverage and also limit the loss to the premium paid, which is a good investment strategy.

F Ford Motor Co. stock market chart

Chart courtesy of www.StockCharts.com

Let?s take a look at Ford and assume you want an option investment strategy that equates to 1,000 shares of Ford. You feel Ford could rally to $15.00 by December 2013.

Assuming this, you buy 10 call contracts of Ford, equal to 1,000 shares of the underlying stock. You are looking at the December 2013 expiry for the Ford in-the-money $12.00 call for a premium of $133.00. The cost per contract of $133.00 equates to $1,333 per 10 contracts, which is the maximum risk under this investment strategy. If Ford fails to hold at $12.00 by the December 20, 2013 expiry, the premium you paid is lost in this investment strategy. The upside breakeven is $13.33, which is pretty good, given there?s a good chance Ford will trade above this level by the expiry.

Now, say Ford jumps to $15.00 by the expiry; you would make $1.67 per share, or $1,670 for the 10 contracts, for a leveraged return of 125% in less than a year under this investment strategy.

The maximum risk is $1,333, but you more than double your money if Ford moves up to $15.00 by the expiry, which is a good risk-to-reward investment strategy.

You can apply this Ford example to many stocks that may interest you as a lower-risk investment strategy alternative to buying the stock, especially given the current market risk.

Microsoft joins list of companies recently hacked

(AP) ? Microsoft has joined the list of prominent technology companies confirming they have been hit by a recent computer hacking attack.

In a blog posting Friday, Microsoft said it had found no evidence that any customer data had been heisted.

Microsoft Corp. gave few other details about the break-in, except to say that was it similar to a hacking attack that online social networking leader Facebook Inc. disclosed last week. Facebook had said its investigation had discovered other companies had been hacked, but didn't identify the other victims.

Like Facebook, Microsoft says it is still investigating how malicious software was planted on what it said were a small number of its computers.

Online messaging service Twitter also recently disclosed that hackers may have stolen information about 250,000 of its users.

Author of Seward book to speak at Union's Founders Day

Walter Stahr, left, will speak today at Union about his new book on the life of William Henry Seward.

Walter Stahr, left, will speak today at Union about his new book on the life of William Henry Seward.

? William Henry Seward?s college alma mater is joining Hollywood and the publishing world in putting the 19th-century politician in the spotlight.

The New York native was Abraham Lincoln?s secretary of state during the Civil War. Seward, as portrayed by David Strathairn, figures prominently in Steven Spielberg?s Oscar-nominated film ?Lincoln,? and Seward?s story is told in a new biography written by Walter Stahr of Exeter, N.H.

Seward is the focus of the keynote address Stahr will give this afternoon at Union College as part of the Founders Day celebration. Seward graduated from Union in 1820 and several years later joined a law firm in Auburn in central New York.

Stahr's keynote address will be held at 12:45 p.m. in Memorial Chapel. Founders Day commemorates the 218th anniversary of the college?s charter.

To read a review of Stahr's book in the New Yorker magazine, click here.

According to USA Today, Stahr "argues convincingly that other than presidents, Seward was the foremost American statesman of the 19th century."

Another victory for Snohomish High School football star

by HEATHER GRAF / KING 5 News

KING5.com

Posted on February 19, 2013 at 7:33 PM

Updated today at 8:06 PM

Over the last three years, he's become the hometown hero of Snohomish High School.? Ike Ditzenberger is a special needs student turned football star who gained YouTube fame in 2010.? Now, he's back in the spotlight for a different reason.

Ike is almost 20 years old, and like most special needs students, he's been in high school for more than four years.

"Ike is now what he calls a super senior, so he's in his 13th year of school, and he is a special needs boy with down syndrome," said his mother, Kay Ditzenberger.

Video of his first touchdown in October 2010 has been viewed around the world.? Since then, he's been the heart of his school's team.

Because of Ike's age, the current Washington Interscholastic Activities Association rules would make him ineligible to play football next year.

It's something Ike was incredibly disappointed about.? He loves the sport, and his parents say football and wrestling helped him both socially and emotionally.

"He's actually become a completely different person," she said.

Ike's friends and teammates saw that transformation firsthand.? So when a government teacher told them to come up with legislation to pitch to lawmakers in Olympia, they instantly thought of Ike.

"As an assignment in government class they put together a bill and called it the Ike Bill," said Kay.

The 'Ike Act', also known as Senate Bill 5172, would allow him and other special needs students to participate in extracurricular activities for the duration of their time in high school, no matter their age.

Several state lawmakers quickly jumped on board, and that's all it took to catch the attention of the WIAA.

WIAA Executive Director Mike Colbrese says a change to the state law books isn't' necessary.? Instead, he decided to immediately change the current WIAA policy.? He says Ike will be allowed to play football next year, and the requests of other special needs' students will be reviewed and decided on a case-by-case basis.

Ditzenberger was thrilled when he heard the news.

Still, his mother and a few others plan to continue to push the bill named for her son.

She says it's necessary to protect their basic civil rights.

"I wish this for all special needs children, for all children, regardless of their ability," she said.? "Special needs children should have access to the same resources as other kids."

The concern of the WIAA is that changing the state law would create a slippery slope.? For example, a team might be given a competitive physical advantage if a 21-year-old, high functioning special needs student is on their team.

A statement from WIAA reads:

"Through discussions between the WIAA staff, Snohomish High School students and administration, along with a family member of a special needs student, the Association will on a case-by-case basis waive WIAA rule 18.14.0 - Season Limitations.? The case-by-case review allows the Association to determine a consistent course of action for all waiver requests."

Regardless of what happens, Ike and his friends consider it a victory, because the boy that loves football so very much will get to play another season.

LG launches LTE-equipped Tab-Book Ultra and U460 laptop in Korea

LG launches LTE-equipped Tab-Book Ultra and IdeaPad U460 in Korea

We weren't convinced LG's Z160 convertible was skinny enough for Ultrabook status when we went hands-on at CES, but the Korean company has run with the title and launched the Tab-Book Ultra in its homeland. The 11.6-inch slider runs full-fat Windows 8 on an Intel Core i5 CPU in the top-end configuration (GH5WK), and much to the joy of data-hungry users, packs an LTE radio in addition to standard WiFi. Those who want a more traditional laptop experience but also need 4G for the road can now purchase an LTE refresh of the U460 notebook, which has been launched in tandem. LG will be showing off the LTE-equipped Tab-Book Ultra at MWC later this month, although its 'new series' of smartphones is sure to steal all the attention. We're still in the dark about when the Z160 will be available elsewhere, but Korean e-tailers are listing it at circa 1,400,000 won (around $1,300), so we can probably expect a similar price when it starts touring.

Hugo Chavez's Twitter Account Says He's Back in Venezuela

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Michael Jordan never played against LeBron James but that has not stopped the two from going one-on-one over how to determine greatness on the basketball court. Jordan, widely hailed as the best player of all-time and who turns 50 on Sunday, believes it is all about championship rings, while James, 28, thinks that view is a little too simplistic. The debate has been the chief talking point of reporters and players in the run-up to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) All-Star game in Houston on Sunday. ...

How will the chips fall in China's cashless casino bar?

SANYA, China (Reuters) - Placing bets on green-felt baccarat tables in a new casino bar on China's southern Hainan island, punters seem oblivious to a huge wager quietly being placed around them, one that could potentially siphon business from the world's largest gaming hub in Macau an hour's flight away.

For now, players at Jesters casino bar, part of the newly opened Mangrove Tree Resort World on Sanya Bay, cannot win cash - only points that they can use to pay for accommodation, luxury goods, jewelry and artwork for sale at the resort.

Owned by art, film and real estate mogul Zhang Baoquan, the casino bar marks the Chinese government's first tacit approval of a gaming concept outside of Macau. Global investors, including some of the world's biggest gaming companies, are watching to see how the chips will fall.

"Our casino bar is the first in the country. The government is monitoring, it's a test," Zhang told Reuters in a recent interview at his 23rd-floor office overlooking his sprawling 173-acre property that opened late last year.

"Right now we are not at this stage (legalising casino gambling), but my personal opinion is, in future, there is a big possibility that they will have."

The stakes are enormous -- China's monopoly gambling site, Macau, raked in $38 billion in gaming revenues last year, primarily from Chinese gamblers. If Beijing were to allow gambling elsewhere in the country, cash would follow.

It's not just the Chinese government that is watching the development. MGM Resorts International opened a hotel in Sanya last year and fellow U.S. casino operator Caesars Entertainment is set to open a hotel in 2014.

An MGM spokesman said the company had no plan to introduce "anything of this kind". Caesars did not respond to requests for comment.

Dressed in jeans and a black-and-white Hawaiian shirt during his interview, the 56-year-old Zhang said he aims to create an integrated resort similar to those in Las Vegas and Singapore where gaming, convention space and retail outlets are offered together.

Mangrove Tree Resort World, the newest addition to Hainan's rapidly developing hotel scene, will be China's biggest resort when construction is completed next year. It will have more than 4,000 rooms, a convention hall accommodating 6,000 people and facilities including a water park.

It is one of 10 integrated resorts that Zhang is developing around the country, including one more in Sanya and others stretching from Lhasa in Tibet to the eastern coastal city Qingdao.

While the Chinese government does not permit casinos in the country outside of Macau, Zhang - ranked by Forbes as one of the country's 300 richest people in 2012 with $600 million - said Hainan could become an exception.

Sensitive to existing restrictions, the soft-spoken businessman emphasized cultural attractions such as his art gallery that, along with the casino bar, will be incorporated into the planned resorts.

WINNING "MANGROVE" POINTS

Inside Jesters, which models itself on Macau's casino halls with garish chandeliers and a giant roulette wheel ceiling, players buy tickets costing 500 yuan ($80) each. Bets range from 20-2,000 yuan in the mass area, while the high-limits area is set at 2,000-100,000 yuan. Big whale punters will be able to bet over 100,000 yuan once the VIP room opens on the second floor.

The casino bar, with 50 gaming tables now, is currently open only to hotel guests, but when the resort is completed, local residents will be allowed in.

When players win, they receive "Mangrove" points that can be used to buy products available in the casino such as an iPad 3G or a Rimowa suitcase. Once luxury brands open outlets within the resort, customers will be able to spend their points in those stores. Art work from Zhang's Beijing art gallery is also available for purchase.

Retail stores including Prada and Louis Vuitton will be part of a network of 20 luxury stores that will open at the resort next year, Zhang said.

Zhang, president of Beijing conglomerate Antaeus, has the financial backing of China Development Bank. The state lender invested 70 percent of the cost of the Mangrove Tree expansion.

"The local governments are very supportive," says the boyish-looking Zhang, who started off as a carpenter in his hometown of Zhenjiang in eastern Jiangsu province, and now is well known as an arts philanthropist and prominent film investor.

Married to Wang Qiuyang, a mountaineer whose father Wang Chengbin was a former army commander, Zhang said any potential change to gambling restrictions would take time, adding that the government would need to decide whether to let other operators open similar casino bars.

"Gambling culturally is a very bad thing, but today there is a difference -- gambling is a financial tool," said Zhang.

"In Asia, even North Korea has two casinos. The richest country, Singapore, before you would never think society would accept it there. All over the world the attitude towards casinos is different from what it was traditionally."

SANYA AND BEYOND

China is positioning Hainan as an international tourist destination, approving the construction of 15 large resorts and 63 five-star hotels as part of the country's five-year plan.

As Chinese spend their money in new casinos across Asia from the Philippines to Vietnam, pressure is growing on Beijing to keep more gamblers at home.

"To some extent, the approval of gaming on Chinese soil is inevitable," said Gary Pinge, analyst at Macquarie Group in Hong Kong.

"With regional markets already vying for a share of the Chinese gambling wallet, unless China brings gaming onto its own shores, it will not only lose tax revenues to other countries, but also the 'multiplier effect' from the consumption spend."

In the meantime, Zhang is pushing ahead with his expansion plans. Aiming to list the Mangrove Tree brand on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2015, Zhang hopes to use the capital raised to take his Mangrove Tree brand outside of China.

"Sydney, the Maldives, the United States, England, Paris and Turkey" would all be good, said Zhang with a shy smile.

Foreclosure Crisis may be coming to an End | THE REAL ESTATE ...

In a report out of ABCNews.com, experts believe the worst is over in the foreclosure crisis that has been wreaking havoc on distressed homeowners over the past six years.? Foreclosure numbers are trending downward as the national foreclosure rate fell 28 percent in January compared to last year.? Lenders also took control of fewer houses in the past year.? Many states are facing this issue head on with both legislation and programs put in place to curb foreclosure starts and give resources to struggling homeowners.

Get this: California, a state that has taken quite a beating throughout the foreclosure crisis, had a 75 percent decrease in foreclosures from a year ago. If that isn?t a sign that things are finally turning around then I?m not sure what is.

However, we haven?t fully turned the corner just yet.? Florida still leads the nation in foreclosures with one in every 300 homes slated for foreclosure.? That?s more than twice the national average.? See the full report here.

(AP) ? Col. Faraj el-Dersi, who defected to the rebel side from Moammar Gadhafi's police force, was gunned down late last year on the streets of Benghazi, and he bled to death in the arms of his teenage daughter.

As Libya on Sunday marked the second anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled Gadhafi, the death of el-Dersi and nearly 40 other similar slayings are seen as evidence that some in the country are too impatient for a political system that has yet to deliver justice and national reconciliation.

Suspicion in many of the killings of senior security and military officials has fallen on Islamists who were brutally suppressed under Gadhafi. Now, they have become among the most powerful groups in the new Libya, particularly in the east, with heavily armed militias at their command.

And they are settling old scores themselves, rather than wait for transitional justice ? the process of society punishing or forgiving the abuses of the old regime.

Mustafa al-Kufi, a 59-year-old former prisoner and political activist, said the various post-Gadhafi governments and the current parliament are all fearful that if they head down the path of transitional justice, many members of the ruling class would be among those punished for past wrongdoing.

"This is a very pressing issue and a core demand in the street," said al-Kufi, who spent 12 years in prison under Gadhafi.

"We need to know who did what and then ask families of the victims for forgiveness. But since this didn't take place, violence will continue because there is no justice.

Like other Arab countries that ousted authoritarian leaders, Libya is now mired in a chaotic and violent transition to a new society. It is plagued by unruly and heavily armed militias that have slowly come under a unified command but remain filled with hard-liners who were in the front line in the war against Gadhafi.

The transition is further complicated by an autonomy movement in the oil-rich east, a central government too weak to exert its authority across the vast desert nation, and heavily armed Islamic extremists who are pressing to fill a power vacuum.

The civil war swept Gadhafi from power, but the bitterness and rage lingers in a country where the authoritarian government imprisoned, tortured and killed its opponents.

Hana al-Gallal, a prominent Benghazi lawyer, said allowing old regime figures to be part of the new order will only fuel more violence.

"Those whose sons were killed, their dreams shattered by the Gadhafi regime, will seek revenge when they see them back in power," she said. "The result is assassinations."

Some of the anger is directed at those who were in the old government ? from low-level police officials to ex-ministers who are now police chiefs and lawmakers. That has prompted a push to prevent those with ties to the former leadership from serving in positions of power.

Libya's parliament, the General National Congress, is debating a draft bill that would bar anyone deemed to have had ties to the former regime from state institutions for 10 years. A version of the draft law published on the GNC's website last week listed 36 reasons for excluding Libyans from political life.

They include those who participated in Gadhafi's coup in 1969; members of the notorious Revolutionary Guards, which were formed to hunt down the dictator's opponents; those who took part in reform efforts in the 2000s led by Gadhafi's son, Seif al-Islam; and those who worked for leading magazines, newspapers, news agencies or served as an ambassador under Gadhafi.

The bill's supporters say such sweeping measures are needed to allow the ministries and state institutions in the fledgling democracy to develop free of the toxic influence and corruption of the Gadhafi era and to stop the cycles of bloodshed like what happened in Benghazi.

Al-Gallal says the risk is worth the potential payoff.

"We have lost youth like budding flowers for the sake of the country. We have young men who lost their limbs for the sake of the country. Can't you just lose a post, not become a minister or a lawmaker, for some time?" she said.

"If two out of 10 decisions to oust regime members are not right, it doesn't matter. The most important is to get rid of the eight others."

For critics of the bill, however, such a ban perpetuates the Gadhafi regime's practice of excluding a large bloc of the population from political life.

Mohammed el-Mufti, a historian and veteran political analyst, said such tactics will not lead to reconciliation but will fuel more turmoil.

"The revolution won. We got rid of Gadhafi. So why chase these people now?" he asked. "Why create a scarecrow and new ghosts of the loyalists?"

If implemented, the law would bar a chunk of current lawmakers and government officials, regardless of whether they defected to the rebel side during the eight-month civil war that ended with the killing of Gadhafi in October 2011.

Many of the leaders of the rebellion, including the head of the opposition National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, as well as the rebel's wartime prime minister, Mahmoud Jibril, would be barred. Abdul-Jalil was justice minister under Gadhafi, while Jibril, who is the leader of the largest political party in parliament, was a top strategist with Seif al-Islam's Libya Tomorrow project.

Even the country's current president, Mohammed el-Megarif, would be eliminated because he served as Libya's ambassador to India in 1980.

Another body, called the Supreme Agency for Standards of Integrity and Nationalism, vets Libyans for links to the regime. Sifting through thousands of pages of documents culled from the archives of the regime's Revolutionary Committees, the agency's workers search for evidence of links to Gadhafi's government or security agencies by current officials.

Spokesman Omar Habasi said the agency has disqualified hundreds of people nominated to government posts after finding links to the former regime.

Among those scratched was Ashur Shway, a popular security chief in Benghazi who was nominated by the current government to become the interior minister. Shway appealed to the Constitutional Court, which ruled in his favor and overturned the ban.

"It's impossible to start reconciliation without first presenting those implicated in crimes to justice and then start reconciliation," he said.

But there indications that some people have not waited for the political system to deliver justice.

Such is the case of el-Dersi, whose killing was the last in a series of assassinations in Benghazi that has shaken the city and prompted residents to set up tents in city squares and man checkpoints in their own neighborhoods.

As Libyans filled the streets Sunday, dancing and celebrating the anniversary of their revolt, el-Dersi's 17-year-old daughter remained shaken by her father's death.

"When I hear shooting, I remember the whole thing all over again," she said, choking back tears.

Ben Stiller Called 'A Good Day To Die Hard' Back In 1992

In a time when most of the comedy shorts online have a shelf life of about two days, it's something special to find a bit still relevant more than 20 years later. Especially when the message is this: "Die Hard" sequels are ridiculous. In 1992, even before "Die Hard: With a Vengeance" hit theaters, "The [...]

Amphibian study shows how biodiversity can protect against disease

Feb. 13, 2013 ? The richer the assortment of amphibian species living in a pond, the more protection that community of frogs, toads and salamanders has against a parasitic infection that can cause severe deformities, including the growth of extra legs, according to a new study by the University of Colorado Boulder.

The findings, published Feb. 14 in the journal Nature, support the idea that greater biodiversity in larger-scale ecosystems, such as forests or grasslands, may also provide greater protection against diseases, including those that attack humans. For example, a larger number of mammal species in an area may curb cases of Lyme disease, while a larger number of bird species may slow the spread of West Nile virus.

"How biodiversity affects the risk of infectious diseases, including those of humans and wildlife, has become an increasingly important question," said Pieter Johnson, an assistant professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and lead author of the study. "But as it turns out, solidly testing these linkages with realistic experiments has proven very challenging in most systems."

Researchers have struggled to design comprehensive studies that could illuminate the possible connection between disease transmission and the number of species living in complex ecosystems. Part of the problem is simply the enormous number of organisms that may need to be sampled and the vast areas over which those organisms may roam.

The new CU-Boulder study overcomes that problem by studying smaller, easier-to-sample ecosystems. Johnson and his team visited hundreds of ponds in California, recording the types of amphibians living there as well as the number of snails infected by the pathogen Ribeiroia ondatrae. Snails are an intermediate host used by the parasite during part of its life cycle.

"One of the great challenges in studying the diversity-disease link has been collecting data from enough replicate systems to differentiate the influence of diversity from background 'noise,' " Johnson said. "By collecting data from hundreds of ponds and thousands of amphibian hosts, our group was able to provide a rigorous test of this hypothesis, which has relevance to a wide range of disease systems."

Johnson's team buttressed its field observations both with laboratory tests designed to measure how prone to infection each amphibian species is and by creating pond replicas outside using large plastic tubs stocked with tadpoles that were exposed to a known number of parasites. All of the experiments told the same story, Johnson said. Greater biodiversity reduced the number of successful amphibian infections and the number of deformed frogs.

In all, the CU-Boulder researchers spent three years sampling 345 wetlands and recording malformations -- which include missing, misshapen or extra sets of hind legs -- caused by parasitic infections in 24,215 amphibians. They also cataloged 17,516 snails. The results showed that ponds with half a dozen amphibian species had a 78 percent reduction in parasite transmission compared to ponds with just one amphibian species. The research team also set up experiments in the lab and outdoors using 40 artificial ponds, each stocked with 60 amphibians and 5,000 parasites.

The reason for the decline in parasitic infections as biodiversity increases is likely related to the fact that ponds add amphibian species in a predictable pattern, with the first species to appear being the most prone to infection and the later species to appear being the least prone. For example, the research team found that in a pond with just one type of amphibian, that amphibian was almost always the Pacific chorus frog, a creature that is able to rapidly reproduce and quickly colonize wetland habitats, but which is also especially vulnerable to infection and parasite-induced deformities.

On the other hand, the California tiger salamander was typically one of the last species to be added to a pond community and also one of the most resistant to parasitic infection. Therefore, in a pond with greater biodiversity, parasites have a higher chance of encountering an amphibian that is resistant to infection, lowering the overall success rate of transmission between infected snails and amphibians.

This same pattern -- of less diverse communities being made up of species that are more susceptible to disease infection -- may well play out in more complex ecosystems as well, Johnson said. That's because species that disperse quickly across ecosystems appear to trade off the ability to quickly reproduce with the ability to develop disease resistance.

"This research reaches the surprising conclusion that the entire set of species in a community affects the susceptibility to disease," said Doug Levey, program director in the National Science Foundation's Division of Environmental Biology, which helped fund the research. "Biodiversity matters."

The sheer magnitude of the recent study also reinforces the connection between deformed frogs and parasitic infection, Johnson said. Beginning in the mid-1990s reports of frogs with extra, missing or misshapen legs skyrocketed, attracting widespread attention in the media and motivating scientists to try to figure out the cause. Johnson was among the researchers who found evidence of a link between infection with Ribeiroia and frog deformities, though the apparent rise in reports of deformations, and its underlying cause, remains controversial.

While the new study has implications beyond parasitic infections in amphibians, it does not mean that an increase in biodiversity always results in a decrease in disease, Johnson cautioned. Other factors also affect rates of disease transmission. For example, a large number of mosquitoes hatching in a particular year will increase the risk of contracting West Nile virus, even if there has been an increase in the biodiversity of the bird population. Birds act as "reservoir hosts" for West Nile virus, harboring the pathogen indefinitely with no ill effects and passing the pathogen onto mosquitoes.

"Our results indicate that higher diversity reduces the success of pathogens in moving between hosts," Johnson said. "Nonetheless, if infection pressure is high, for instance in a year with high abundance of vectors, there will still be a significant risk of disease; biodiversity will simply function to dampen transmission success."

Indiana University seismographs detected North Korea's nuclear blast

When North Korea tested a nuclear device this week, the blast was detected as far away as Bloomington.

An Indiana University seismologist says equipment IU operates as part of a Midwestern earthquake-monitoring network detected North Korea's nuclear test. The test was widely condemned, with President Barack Obama calling it?a "highly provocative act" that threatens U.S. security and international peace.

IU operates seismographs in a network of about 70 such devices in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky that track the North America continent's seismic activity.

Professor of geological sciences Michael Hamburger says some seismographs in that network detected the North Korean blast around 10:10 p.m. Monday, about 13 minutes after the nuclear device was detonated.

He says the IU experiment picked up a P-wave signal from the explosion at detectors in Missouri. That explosion was equivalent to a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.

Monday's nuclear test in North Korea is the authoritarian communist nation's third to date.

North Korea says its nuclear test Tuesday was its "first response" to American threats and warns it will continue with unspecified "second and third measures of greater intensity" if the United States maintains its "hostility."

The test was condemned worldwide, with the?European Union saying?it poses a threat to regional and international peace. The body also said the move defied UN Security Council resolutions, which was echoed by other countries.
