Home Instead Senior Care Burbank: Health 411: Aging mom may ...

My 82-year-old mother has been accusing family members of spying on her, listening in on her phone conversations and entering her home when she's not there, among other things, off and on for about 10 years. She told her doctor she won't talk with us. Is there anything we can do? Are there resources and/or free counseling services to help us work out issues with our mom so we can talk with her doctor?

You can try to contact your mom's doctor to discuss her condition, particularly given that you're concerned she may be suffering from dementia and unable to properly care for herself.

In some states, doctors will talk to a family member about a person's condition even without a legal release, says Garvin Reiter, a certified elder law attorney in Portland, Ore., and a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. That's especially true if it is suspected or known that the patient is suffering from dementia.

But if the doctor is aware of a rift in the family, you're unlikely to get through, Reiter says. "They will definitely put up firewalls," he said. In that case, you'd need legal documents to gain access.

When it comes to planning for situations like these, you'll need four legal documents to be fully prepared, said Kathleen Kelly, executive director of the National Center on Caregiving in San Francisco.

The first document is a trust. This allows a family member or friend to manage a person's assets.

The second is a durable power of attorney for finances, which grants someone authority to make financial decisions on another person's behalf.

To make decisions about someone's medical care, you'll need a separate durable power of attorney for health. Finally, an advance healthcare directive allows someone to specify their wishes so they can maintain control over the type of treatment they do ? or do not ? receive. An advance healthcare directive may also designate a person to communicate those wishes on their behalf when they are unable to do so.

"Having all of those documents together is the biggest gift a person could [give] their family and friends," Kelly says.

Although it sounds like your mom may be tough to reason with, don't assume that setting up a power of attorney for health, which would give you access to her doctors, is out of the question, Reiter says. Dementia is progressive in nature. Until it reaches a stage where all cognitive function is lost, there are moments, albeit decreasing in frequency, when an individual retains the ability to reason. Depending on the stage of her dementia, you may be able to catch your mom at a time when she is lucid and clear-thinking.

To get the necessary legal papers in place, you'll have to demonstrate that she has transactional competency, meaning your mom understands the transaction in front of her at that moment she's carrying it out, Reiter says.

An attorney can help establish your mom's competency and get the legal papers in order. Since laws vary greatly by state, it's a good idea to work with a local attorney with experience in elder law. You can find one in the online directory of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys at?http://www.naela.org. You can also search for attorneys with experience in this area on the National Elder Law Foundation's website. Go to?http://www.nelf.org, click on "About NELF" and enter your state under the heading "Finding a CELA."

But first, you'll need a physician to determine that your mom is incapacitated, Clingman says. Then an independent lawyer will be appointed to represent her interests. Finally, a judge will decide whether to make you her guardian. Keep in mind that this can be an onerous and expensive process. "Guardianship is a last resort," Clingman, says.

There are a number of places you can turn to for assistance in these matters.

Geriatric case managers, who plan and coordinate care for the elderly and disabled, can be very helpful in identifying and navigating the range of needed resources. You can find one through the Assn. of Certified Geriatric Care Managers by visiting?http://www.caremanager.org?and looking under the "About Care Management" tab.

For information about healthcare documents, estate planning and more, try Help4srs.org, operated by the Torrance-based nonprofit Healthcare and Elder Law Programs Corp.

Services can also be located through the Family Care Navigator on the Family Caregiver Alliance's website, http://www.caregiver.org.

All states have an agency on aging, and the federal Department of Health and Human Services offers an Eldercare Locator at?http://www.eldercare.gov?to connect families to services for older adults. The department can also be reached at (800) 677-1116.

Mothers of Kids With Autism Earn Less, Study Shows

MONDAY, March 19 (HealthDay News) -- Mothers of children with autism and autism spectrum disorders earn significantly less than what mothers of children who have no health limitations earn, a new study has found.

These moms even earn less than mothers of children with other health limitations.

Mothers of children with autism earned, on average, less than $21,000 a year, the researchers found. That was 56 percent less than mothers whose children had no health limitations and 35 percent less than mothers whose children had other health limitations.

In addition, moms who have children with autism are 6 percent less likely to be employed, and work an average of seven hours less per week than mothers of children with no health limitations, the study found.

While the researchers did not find differences in fathers' incomes, the overall income in families that have children with autism suffers, said lead researcher David Mandell, associate director of the Center for Autism Research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and associate director of the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.

"Families of children with autism experience a 28 percent reduction in income compared to families with typically developing children," he said. The family incomes of parents whose children have autism is also less, 21 percent, than those whose children have other health limitations, Mandell found.

The study is published online March 19 and in the April print issue of Pediatrics.

For the study, Mandell and his colleagues looked at data from the 2002-2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. This ongoing survey of U.S. households collects detailed information on medical conditions, health services use and expenditure, and other data.

The researchers looked at 261 children with autism spectrum disorders, nearly 3,000 with other health limitations and more than 64,000 with no health limitations.

About 67 percent of the children with autism had mothers who worked outside the home. About 92 percent of the kids with autism had working fathers.

Autism spectrum disorders now affect about one in 110 children in the United States. The spectrum includes a range of neurodevelopmental disorders, all marked by difficulties in social and communication skills and repetitive behaviors.

A mother may cut back work hours or drop out of the workforce to help supervise their child's care, including advocating for services, according to the researchers.

The costs of caring for children with other disabilities is about 5 percent to 12 percent of family income, the researchers noted, citing other research.

The researchers didn't have information on how severe the autism was in each case, so Mandell couldn't say if costs are more or go up if the autism is more severe.

The findings don't surprise Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York.

"Basically, autism is taking a double toll," he said. Besides the increased costs for health care and other services, the reduced earnings also have an impact, Adesman pointed out.

Parents can and should reach out for help, the experts stressed.

"Take advantage of services available," Adesman said.

For example, Mandell noted, a parent group in Philadelphia will send someone knowledgeable to go with a parent of a child with autism to the school meeting to develop the educational plan.

Peter Bell, executive vice president for services and programs for Autism Speaks, an advocacy group, said the task of caring for a child with autism can be daunting.

"The study isn't surprising for families who live with autism every day," he said. "When their child is diagnosed with autism, it is a game changer."

Insert Coin: JuiceTank is a two-pronged iPhone case

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.
Granted, claims by the JuiceTank's creators that their product is "the first ever iPhone charger and case in one" may be a bit overblown, but its design is certainly novel enough to make us give it a second look. The product looks like a pretty standard hard-shelled iPhone 4 / 4S case from the front -- flip it over though, and you'll see two charging prongs embedded in the back. Click the button just below and they'll pop up, allowing you to plug the handset directly into the wall -- no cords or separate chargers needed. Of course, this initial version is made specifically for North American-type outlets, so if you live outside the region or travel a lot, the novelty might be lost on you. If you're covered, however, you can pick up a limited edition green version by being one of the first 400 people to pledge $40 or more. Check out a video explanation / plea after the break.

2K Games release Bioshock Infinite Handyman video ? Video ...

2K Games is continuing the slow trickle of information regarding what we can expect to find in BioShock Infinite. And the video released today gives us some insight into how the team is working to really shake things up with different enemy units.

This video is all about a character known as the Handyman. He?s encased in a metal suit with an exposed heart and cut up face, while the back story as to why he?s like like that is meant to be quite sad, apparently. But it?s his abilities in-game that has me excited.

As well as being a formidable foe due to his size and massize ceramic fists, he can appear from distance very quickly due to his ability to jump long distances (think The Hulk). That makes him a constant threat you may hear arrive before you actually see him.

Interestingly, even other enemy units are scared of him. That?s not because he means them harm, but he will search them out and actively use them against the player. For example, he may pick up a smaller enemy and throw them at the player causing an immediate threat to you. In so doing you have two threats to worry about while he?s around: the Handyman trying to grab or hit you himself, as well as the units he launches directly at you while moving in closer for an attack.

I expect there?s going to be more than a few memorable set pieces involving this character throughout the game, which sees a release on October 16.

'Walking Dead' Cast Reflects On 'Shakespearean' Death

'Once you get to this level of expansion, you have to pop,' Norman Reedus tells MTV News about Jon Bernthal's villain, Shane Walsh.

The death of Shane Walsh on "The Walking Dead" wasn't exactly shocking to comic-book readers, though the manner of the divisive character's exit was certainly a surprise: In the source material, Shane is shot and killed by Carl, whereas on the TV show, the disgruntled ex-cop was stabbed in the heart by his old friend Rick — a change the "Walking Dead" cast has described as nothing short of Shakespearean.

"There was so much of the love triangle [between Shane, Rick and Lori] that happened, and that had to go somewhere," actor Norman Reedus told MTV News. "It's almost sort of Shakespearean in a way.

"[Actor Jon Bernthal] did such a good job with that character and taking it some place," Reedus continued. "And I think once you get to this level of expansion, you have to pop. ... That's what it felt like to me."

Reedus' co-stars Steven Yeun and Melissa McBride agreed with his assessment. For them, it was the actual night of shooting Shane's death that sticks with them the most.

"Seeing the work that Jon and [Andrew Lincoln] and everybody put towards that story line, it's awesome," Yeun shared. "I remember we gathered to watch that final scene, and it was like, they did it like 50 times, and each time you were just like, 'Holy F...' You know? It's so good."

McBride agreed: "It was so unsettling to see them when we were watching the scene being filmed. It was unsettling to see the two of them in that arrangement there. After all they'd been through, and as close as they'd been, it was very strange."

Strange, but monumental. To date, "Walking Dead" has been largely about Rick and Shane's story. To lose one of those characters as early as season two definitely marks a major shift for the series.

"They started the show together, like best buddies right off the bat," Reedus said. "And to see that pop at the end was, yeah, it was a big deal."

Top ECB official sees 'mild recession' in eurozone

(AP) ? A top European Central Bank official says the 17 countries that use the euro will probably see a "very mild recession" this year and that higher oil prices should not have a lasting impact on inflation.

Benoit Coeure, an ECB executive board member, told Japan's Nikkei newspaper that growth was held back by scarce bank credit and necessary government budget-cutting because of problems with debt in some eurozone countries.

He added that higher oil prices and increased value-added taxes on consumer purchases in some countries had led the bank to raise its outlook for inflation but that "insofar as they are temporary, higher energy prices should not have a lasting impact on inflation."

Coeure said that whether inflation rose over the longer term would depend on whether higher oil prices were reflected in higher wages, creating so-called second round effects or a wage-price spiral.

He said in an interview text made public Sunday that "there are good reasons to believe that second-round effects will be limited."

Coeure is one of six members of the ECB's executive board, the body that runs the bank day to day at its Frankfurt headquarters. He also sits on the 23-member governing council, which decides interest rates.

Higher prices have become part of the bank's discussion of the economy in recent days thanks to higher prices for crude and an easing of the eurozone debt crisis with a successful debt reduction and second bailout for Greece. Fears of a deeper recession and financial crisis pushed inflation concerns to the background in the last two months of last year when the bank cut interest rates.

But inflation increased in February to 2.7 percent, above the bank's goal of just under two percent, and ECB President Mario Draghi said at his news conference last week that it was likely to remain over 2 percent for all of this year before falling. For 2013 the bank projects inflation between 0.9 and 2.3 percent.

Draghi made renewed mention of the bank's primary mission of keeping inflation under control, as spelled out in the basic EU treaty, saying that task was "of the essence."

That, along with expectations of a mild rather than deep recession, lead some analyst to think the ECB will not lower its benchmark rate below the current record low of 1 percent and may leave them unchanged into next year. Lower rates help growth but can worsen inflation if done at the wrong time.

The bank has helped bring a period of respite from the eurozone debt crisis with two offerings of more than euro1 trillion ($1.32 trillion) in cheap, 3-year loans to banks. The loans added around euro500 billion net in new cash to the banking system, given that some of the money was moved to the new loan offering from previous ECB loan programs.

The money has helped weaker banks repair their finances and led some of them to buy government bonds. That lowered borrowing costs for indebted governments such as Italy and Spain. High borrowing costs fed by fears of default are what drove Greece, Ireland and Portugal to seek bailout loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund.

The eurozone economy shrank 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter, and two quarters of negative growth is one definition of recession.

The ECB's staff projections foresee growth between minus 0.5 percent and plus 0.3 percent this year.

Friday Question 3/2 Where Do Ideas Come From? Creative Problem ...

The SCAMPER list of techniques is very helpful for those who want to make their first draft of an object, service, or product into something better. One can use SCAMPER to substitute their idea with something else, combine it with another idea, adapting it to whatever is possible, modifying or magnifying it to something better, put it to another use, eliminate something that may be wrong, or reversing it or rearranging it.

I will be using Judy?s invention, the SleepPen, to demonstrate how one of SCAMPER?s technique can be used. The technique I will be applying to the SleepPen is the modifying/magnifying technique. After reading Judy?s description on her SleepPen idea, I automatically thought of many possible things that can be modified to further enhance the pen?s true capabilities. The pen has a lot of ?space? for it to be changed around to make it a pen that will be greatly useful for a lot of people, not just students or business people.

One thing that can be modified is the ?taking the important notes? function. This function can be tricky if you think about it. What are important class notes? There is no definite meaning for important notes because it varies from person to person. One may think that every word the professor says is important, while the other may think that the words or sentences that the professor puts emphasis on, are the important notes. It call comes down to the person who?s using the pen. So how can we modify it? We can program that function into picking up certain speaking tones of the professor. If the professor is not speaking passionately about certain things, then the pen can skip over those notes and not write it down for the sleeping note-taker. If the professor is speaking like he?s really into the subject, then the pen should proceed to take down the notes. Or, this ?taking the important notes? function can also be modified further more! Users have the option to install a digital version of the notes that the professor will be speaking about. This version of the notes can be provided by the professors themselves, or provided by the textbook?s company. With this installed, if the user falls asleep or dozes off, the SleepPen will be able to follow along, and take down the most important notes according to the professor or according to the textbook?s version of notes.

Another thing that can be modified is the way the pen looks. According to Judy?s description of her SleepPen idea, we don?t have a clear picture of how the pen will look like. But I think we can modify the image of the pen according to some of the things she had said. If the pen has the option to record the speaker?s voice, the recording part of the pen should be situated at the tip of the pen. The way we hold our pen is at the base, towards the point of the pen, so if we put the recording part of the pen there, our fingers would be in the way of the recording, which would bring about muffled sounds or weird shuffling noises.

Also, how would the overall image of the pen look like? Will it look like a regular ballpoint pen, or will it look like a fountain pen type of writing utensil? If we modify the pen to look like a regular ballpoint pen, it may not hold a lot of the functions that the pen promises that it?ll do, like being a recording device along with being an automatic note taker, and also having the ability to sense that the user is asleep! For all those functions to work, a sort of small computer device must be inside the pen itself, so that the pen will perform all those things. So for all those abilities to fit into one, compressed object is hard. We must think of the SleepPen as a small computer device. So making the SleepPen look like a fountain pen would be the best bet. A fountain pen definitely looks bigger than a regular ballpoint pen, thus it?ll be able to hold the computer parts that will tell the pen what to do and so on.

This pen can also be further modified to fit the uses of the general public. One can add or take away certain functions to fit the needs of the user. So those who are visually impaired can request for the pen to do all the writing for them. They can ask the SleepPen company or salesperson to insert their personal details and other things into the pen, so when the time comes for the impaired to fill out forms or write, the pen can automatically do that for them. Or if toddlers are at the stage where they?re beginning to learn the basics of writing, this SleepPen is also very beneficial for them. The pen can be modified to include writing tutorials for the toddlers. So the pen will have a life of its own, it?ll be able to guide the child?s hand when writing a certain letter of the alphabet or writing a word. It will also repeat the word or letter that it just wrote, so that the child can see and also hear what they are writing. This function can be modified yet again to include help in foreign language as well. So this will be very helpful to those who are learning a new language, or for those who are ESL students.

This SCAMPER technique definitely made my imagination go wild.? Some of them may be hard to interpret, but the point of this SCAMPER technique is to get one?s brain working, to see which area of their object, service, or idea can be modified to work better than it already does.

Avoiding a Baby Boomer Divorce | The Empty Nest Express

?Love is not just a feeling, it is an act of your will? Don Francisco

While the overall divorce rate in the United States has declined, divorce among those aged 50 to 64 has risen. What once was considered unconventional? older couples getting divorced ? is now becoming too familiar in our society.??Now one in four people getting divorced is over the age of 50. In 1990, it was less than one in 10.? This is also called, ?Grey Divorce?. According to the Susan L. Brown, co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green University in Ohio.

The?overall divorce rate in the United States dropped from 18.95 to 17.92. The divorce rate for those 50 to 64 increased from 6.9 divorces per 1,000 marriages in 1990 to 12.6 in 2009.

Also, to compound matters, the divorce rate for aging boomers is twice as high for those who were previously divorced than those who were on their first marriage.

The increase in more people getting divorced later in life is the continuation of the pattern of divorce and remarriage among the baby-boom generation. The primary reasons for divorce are lack of communication followed by infidelity.

Many couples facing divorce state they only stayed together for the children, financial security or simply state that they are ?not happy?, which most likely comes from lack of communication. Also, some people don?t realize or take into account that people do change throughout the years. The person you marriage at age 25 is not the same person 25 years later. They?ve most likely become a parent, advanced in or changed their career, made new friendships and so forth. It is important for couples to realize they must communicate and grow together.

Marriage is a covenant, a life long commitment, a promise, made between two people.

Common Reasons for Divorce and Preventative Measures

1) Adjusting to Retirement ? Difficulties in adjusting to a life together that doesn?t include work.

Prevention ? Discuss what retirement means to you both. Does it include travel, common hobbies, finding another less stressful job, volunteering, exploring hobbies, etc?

2) Identity Crisis ? Spouses who once defined themselves by what they did at work can experience an identity crisis once they stop working.

Prevention ? Although your career may take up a majority of your time, develop a hobby that you can do alone and one that you can do with your spouse. Make sure you and your spouse share at least hobby. This can be a sport or an activity. My husband and I both enjoy attending rodeos, fishing, visiting tourist sites, road trips and our future plans include making patio furniture. We are both open to each others ideas. Understand that when your spouse retires or changes careers that they will need your support.

3) Adjusting to an ?Empty Nest?. An empty house can be difficult to adjust to for both parents. Wives and husbands whose sole focus for years has been on the children and/or their careers ? When all that comes to a halt, often times their identity is lost.

Prevention ? Find a job until your spouse retires even if it is just part time. Volunteer a few days in your community. ?Spend time creating activities you and your spouse can do together. Spend time creating special meals for when your tired spouse comes home from work. It always helps in a relationship to put the other person first. When you give, you often receive more in return. We have also found that downsizing has helped a lot.

4) Work at Home Spouse ? He or she must become accustomed to having someone else around, disrupting their routines.

Prevention ? Set certain times for work so you won?t be disrupted. Take one of those empty bedrooms and set it up as an office if you don?t have one already. Give the working spouse plenty of space to finish their work.

5) I Don?t Know You Anymore ? Reintroduce yourself to your spouse

Prevention ? If you don?t ?date?, start! My husband and I date at least twice a month. We decided to do this after we had been married six weeks. Men, this is a good time to start wining and dining your wife. Wives, this is a good time to plan that special meal or evening with your husband. Also, take time for the simple things: take walks, play games, shop together,? Revisit some of those old romantic haunts. Watch your wedding video and get out your wedding albums. My husband and I renew our vows every five years.

??As baby boomers get older I expect the rate to go down. We are looking at the attitudes of different generations; Generation Y seems to have an interesting sense of renewed excitement about the concept of marriage and the traditional family. Marriage is still in.?

One question to ask yourself if you are contemplating divorce is if all the bad in your?marriage outweighs all the good or vice versa. I have known two couples who after dealing with infidelity,?decided that all the good in the marriage, made their marriage worth fighting for. ?If there is love left in a marriage, it is indeed worth fighting for. Communication is key and a good counselor can really help. And yes, you can fall in love again.

University of Chicago sociologist Linda Waite, and a team of scholars found little to no evidence that unhappily married adults who divorced were typically any happier than unhappily married people who stayed married.

?Even more astounding, researchers also found that two-thirds of unhappily married spouses who stayed married reported that their marriages were happy five years later. In addition, the most unhappy marriages reported the most dramatic turnarounds: among those who rated their marriages as very unhappy, almost eight out of 10 who avoided divorce were happily married five years later.?

If a divorce is inevitable older children still need to be protected according to Stewart:

?Parents need to be open and honest and on the same page on how to deliver the message to the older kids. The same rules apply: Never back stab or put down your ex. Always remember that your child is one half your ex and by putting down your ex you are basically telling kids half of them is not OK. Sometimes older kids hear too much or their parents share too much because they think they can handle it, they can?t. Be honest about your own feelings about what?s happening to you without projecting or burdening your kids with any kind of decisions.?

Socially, problems that will arise with this sad phenomena is that the children instead of a spouse will be expected to look after a single parent who becomes ill and most likely have to care for an aging parent. And since Baby Boomers on the whole have had smaller families, 1.8 children according to the 2004 census, (compared with 3.7 for post World War ll baby boomers) that puts more pressure financially and emotionally on the children.

I think we need to do all we can to prevent divorce and I hope my suggestions can help a?couple who may be wondering where their marriage is headed. As a Christian couple one thing my husband and I do is pray together and for each other on a regular basis. I highly recommend this very bonding experience for all couples. At times the prayers lead to wonderful conversations.

On another note I think couples today really need to understand what commitment means in marriage. The marriage vows are a promise for life and should not be taken lightly. I believe for many people today view divorce as an option ? an out for when things get hard ? even before the ceremony takes place.

To me there is nothing sadder than finding out a couple has divorced after 20, 30 or 40 years or more of marriage. I would love to hear your comments, suggestions, and advise for preventing divorce.

Keeping gum disease is superior to curing it | Fitness and Health ...

Our mouth serves any big role to maintain the general health of our body. This is really because through our mouth, we?re able to eat food which will sustain the power required for our day to day activities. Along with relation to this, we have to take care of it to avoid mouth diseases which will get a new purpose of its parts as well as in link to our body?s overall health. Probably the most common mouth diseases is gum disease which affects the gum?s soft tissues.

So how exactly does gum disease occur and what triggers it? To start with, like all mouth infection, this really is due to bacterial action. Our mouth will usually have bacteria inside it but needs to be maintained at levels which can be surprisingly low and almost negligible. You believe this really is alarming and so why do we?ve bacterial rise in our mouth? The reason being we put foreign objects into our mouth like eating utensils; what about a straw for drinking beverages and also the food we eat are thought foreign objects that could have bacteria.

The most effective and a lot efficient way to take care of gum disease or any mouth diseases as well would be to maintain excellent oral hygiene. This prevents bacteria levels under control thus preventing the creation of mouth ailments and infections. To keep a powerful and efficient oral hygiene, you have to remember to execute these steps, brush, floss and gargle.

After each meal, food particles as well as other debris go mad the mouth. They enter the gaps among teeth, behind the inner cheeks and a few around the back from the throat. To eliminate these food particles, we must brush our teeth carefully through the use of circular, up-down motions employing a toothbrush. This can effectively take away the particles which have chosen the teeth and gum line. Rinse with ample level of water and goes the nasty food particles that induce bacterial development.

After brushing your teeth, you will see instances when there?s stubborn debris that is to be stuck between teeth gaps. This could be removed by flossing using dental floss specially coated with fluoride to incorporate protection for the teeth. One important reminder that you need to keep in mind is the fact that utilizing a toothpick rather than dental floss may cause more injury to your gums. Rather than treatment of food debris, it pushes it much more in the gum line. It could be a clich but, prevention is definitely much better than to cure gum disease.

find out more about treat gum disease, then visit oramd?s site on how to choose the best cure gum disease for your needs.

Snow forecast as twister death toll hits 37

Incredible tales of survival emerge as dozens are dead and entire towns are destroyed from a massive outbreak of storms from the Great Lakes to the Gulf coast. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at?3:20?a.m. ET
HENRYVILLE, Ind. -- As tornado-hit communities searched for victims and removed debris on Saturday, they also got word that their misery isn't over:?A cold front moving in from the north?is likely to?dump snow on the?hardest hit regions on Sunday, the National Weather Service?said in an alert.

A mix of rain and snow will "quickly change over to all snow late Sunday night," the service warned,?in parts of Indiana and Kentucky, where tens of thousands were without power after Friday's twisters that killed at least 39 people, injured hundreds and destroyed or damaged hundreds of?homes.

Temperatures by Sunday night in places like hard-hit Henryville, Ind.,?are likely to dip below 30 degrees F, a problem for anyone without heat.

On Saturday,?several small twisters were reported in southeast Georgia?that?took down trees but caused no injuries. Parts of northern Florida were under a tornado watch.

Friday's?twisters crushed entire blocks of homes, ripped power lines from broken poles and tossed cars, school buses and tractor-trailers onto roadways.

"It's all gone," Andy Bell said of?a neighborhood in Henryville, as he guarded a friend's demolished service garage, not far from where a school bus stuck out from the side of a restaurant and a parking lot where a small classroom chair jutted from a car window.

"It was beautiful," he said, looking around. "And now it's just gone. I mean, gone."

NBC News reported that, as of 1:20 a.m. ET Sunday, there were 37 deaths confirmed by authorities: 20 from Kentucky, 12 from Indiana, three from Ohio, one from Alabama and one from Georgia.

In Kentucky, where?some 300 people were injured and 17,000 lost power, the National Guard and state police searched wreckage for an unknown number of missing.

In Indiana, authorities searched rural communities that officials said "are completely gone."

One person was known to have died in hard-hit Henryville, a town of about 2,000 near Louisville, Ky., and?the birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Col. Harland Sanders.

At first glance, the brick-and-steel framed school in Henryville looked like no match for a tornado, but it protected a handful of students and adults who found themselves trapped in a no-man's land. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

Survivors walked down littered streets with shopping carts full of water and food, handing it out to anyone in need. Hundreds of firefighters and police zipped around a town where few recognizable structures remained; all of Henryville's schools were destroyed.

Survivors recall 'crash, bang, break' at school
Toddler found alive in field

Susie Renner, 54, said she saw two tornadoes barreling down on Henryville within minutes of each other. The first was brown from being filled with debris; the second was black.

"I'm a storm chaser," Renner said, "and I have never been this frightened before."

The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore explains why portions of the US will be seeing many more tornadoes.

Friday's outbreak came two days after?tornadoes killed 13 people in the Midwest and South, and forecasters at the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center had said the day would be one of a handful this year that warranted its highest risk level. By 10 p.m., the weather service had issued 269 tornado warnings. Only 189 warnings were issued in all of February.

"We knew this was coming. We were watching the weather like everyone else," said Danny Rodden, sheriff of Indiana's Clark County. "This was the worst case scenario. There's no way you can prepare for something like this."

2012 tornado disaster relief: How to help

The?storms raised fears that 2012 will be another bad year after 550 deaths were blamed on twisters last year, the deadliest year in nearly a century, according to the National Weather Service.

The highest death tolls last year were from an April outbreak in Alabama and Mississippi that claimed 364 lives, and from a May tornado in Joplin, Mo., that killed 161 people.?

Nearly 100 tornadoes were reported on Friday, but the final number will be smaller once duplicate reports are filtered out.

On Friday,?14 people were reported killed in Indiana --?including four in Chelsea, where a man, woman and their 4-year-old great-grandchild died in one house. Tony Williams, owner of the Chelsea General Store, said the child and mother were huddled in a basement when the storm hit and sucked the 4-year-old out her hands. The mother survived, but her 70-year-old grandparents were upstairs; both died.

"They found them in the field, back behind the house," Williams said.

Two people also died farther north in Holton, where it appeared a tornado cut a diagonal swath down the town's tiny main drag, demolishing a cinderblock gas station in one spot and leaving a tiny white church intact down the road.

Severe storms and tear through the midwest and southern states.

"We are going to continue to hit every county road that we know of that there are homes on and search those homes," said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin. "We have whole communities and whole neighborhoods that are completely gone."

Did tornado spawn mini twisters?
Why so many tornadoes?

Tornadoes were reported in at least six Ohio cities and towns, including the village of Moscow, where a council member found dead in her home was one of at least three people killed in the state.

Several dozen homes were damaged, some stripped down to their foundations, and the Clermont County commissioners called a state of emergency for the first time in 15 years.

Severe winds also caused damage in Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

World News - Religious, political hard-liners face off in Iran election

Painful memories of the last election have led to voter indifference in Iran. To some Iranians, the elections will make little difference to their expectations. NBC News' Ali Arouzi reports from Tehran.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services.

Updated at 8:21 a.m. ET: TEHRAN -- Iranians voted on Friday in a parliamentary election which is expected to reinforce the power of the clerical establishment of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over hard-line political rivals led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The election is unlikely to have much impact on Iran's foreign policies - the country's disputed nuclear program and international relations are already strictly controlled by Khamenei.

But it could allow the clergy to strengthen its hand in determining the political backdrop ahead of a presidential election due in 2013.

'Negative propaganda'
With Iran facing growing international isolation, Western sanctions over its nuclear program and a threat of attack by Israel, Iranian leaders have been calling for a high turnout to bolster their legitimacy.

NYT: Iran warns unmotivated voters of Western plots as election looms

"There is a lot of negative propaganda against our nation ... The arrogant powers are bullying us to maintain their prestige. A high turnout will be better for our nation ... and for preserving security," said Khamenei after casting his vote.

Ayatollah Khamenei's Website / EPA

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei casts his vote in Tehran, Iran, on Friday.

"Whenever there has been more enmity towards Iran, the importance of the elections has been greater."

The election will be the first since the country's disputed presidential election in 2009, when opposition and pro-democracy protests were quelled by security forces.

NBC News' Ali Arouzi reported that there has been no signs of "election fever" in Iran, with advertisements dominating billboards over campaign posters.

Obama seeks harmony with Israel over Iran attack plan

This time round, leading reformist groups have said they will stay away from voting, setting the stage for a straight contest between backers of Khamenei and Ahmadinejad.

A low turnout, however, could nonetheless highlight the extent to which disappointment still exists among Iranian voters over the outcome of the 2009 presidential election.

Str / AP

At schools, in shops, and on the streets of big cities and small towns, daily life plays out in Iran.

While voting stations in affluent northern Tehran were quiet, people?lined up?in central and downtown parts of the city to cast their votes.

"I am here to support my establishment against the enemies' plot by voting," said Mahboubeh Esmaili, 28, holding her baby outside the Hoseiniyeh Ershad polling center in central Tehran, where around 50 people were queuing up to vote.

"Votes in this election are a needle in the eyes of the enemy," another voter told NBC News.

PhotoBlog: Voters cast ballots across Iran

The two main groups that are competing for the 290-seat parliament are the United Front of Principlists, which includes Khamenei loyalists, and the Resistance Front that backs Ahmadinejad.

Cash handouts
Ahmadinejad, the son of a blacksmith, still enjoys the support of many in Iran's poorer communities, largely thanks to his humble image and regular cash handouts. But his popularity has been dented by the country's economic crisis.

Western sanctions aimed at forcing Iran to halt sensitive nuclear work have started to hurt energy and food imports. The West fears Iran is working on developing a nuclear bomb, but Tehran says the program is for electricity generation and other peaceful purposes.

Tehran increased production of higher-grade enriched uranium, heightening concerns that Iran may be developing a bomb. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

The price of staple goods has spiraled because of the falling value of the Iranian currency and fresh European Union and U.S. sanctions on Iran's financial and oil sectors.

Critics have accused Ahmadinejad of making things worse for ordinary Iranians, saying his decision to replace food and fuel subsidies with direct monthly payments since 2010 has fuelled inflation, officially running at around 21 percent.

Political rift
Khamenei will be looking to use the vote to reestablish his hold on power following a political rift between the two leaders when Ahmadinejad tried to supersede Khamenei in Iran's complex political hierarchy.

As tensions with Iran increase over their nuclear programs and Israel considers a strike on Iran, Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., joins Morning Joe to discuss why diplomacy with Iran is the best policy.

Analysts have said Ahmadinejad and his allies have been trying to undermine the central role of the clergy in politics by emphasizing nationalist themes of Iranian history and culture in their speeches.

While Ahmadinejad himself cannot stand for a third term under Iran's constitution, some Iranian media reports said he backed Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaie, his chief of staff, as a candidate to succeed him in the 2013 presidential vote.

The Supreme Leader's campaign got a boost when powerful establishment groups - including influential clerics, the elite Revolutionary Guards and powerful bazaar merchants - formed an alliance to back his loyalists.

The Guardian Council, made up of six clerics and six jurists who vet candidates, has approved 3,467 individuals out of more than 5,382 who initially applied to run in the poll.

Some politicians said that the hard-line council barred many established Ahmadinejad supporters, forcing him to pick younger political unknowns.

Khamenei, who initially endorsed Ahmadinejad's 2009 re-election, publicly distanced himself from the president in April by reinstating the sacked intelligence minister.

'Deviant current'
In the past months, dozens of Ahmadinejad allies have been detained or dismissed from their posts for being linked to a "deviant current" that his rivals say aims to sideline clerics. Ahmadinejad's media adviser has been sentenced to one year in jail for insulting Khamenei.

Reformists did not send in a list of candidates, saying the basic needs of a "free and fair" vote had not been fulfilled.

Major pro-reform political parties have been banned and leading reformists have either been jailed or banned from political activities since the 2009 election, which the opposition says was rigged.

Opposition leaders Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, defeated in the 2009 vote, have been under house arrest for more than a year.
