Xperia Ion gets Ice Cream Sandwich - News - Know Your Cell

AT&T announced in its company blog Wednesday that its customers sporting an Xperia?Ion from Sony can now update their device to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Once again, here's another Android update that isn't?the most current version (that'd be Jelly Bean). But as the story goes with Google's operating system, when an update comes along -- whether it's the latest or not -- you take it. ICS, by the way, isn't all that bad.

You'll get new features, including an updated browser with improved page loading, tabbed browsing, offline reading and desktop mode. You'll also be able to lock and/or unlock specific features, like the camera, text messaging, phone dialer and home screen.

Additionally, you can easily enable or disable Face Unlock. Home screen folders can be created in a pinch just by dragging one app icon onto another (much like Apple's iOS).

Here are a few other things you can expect:

?

  • AT&T says that this particular update will offer faster mobile hotspot and Wi-Fi speeds.
  • Quickly swipe away notifications straight from the new notifications bar
  • Exchange Active Sync has improved calendar and e-mail status indication, along with passcode security enhancements?
  • Up-to-date and improved visuals have been added to the street view in Maps
  • Improved video performance when rotating between portrait and landscape views

?

To get the ICS update for your Xperia Ion, you'll have to download a Mac or PC companion desktop app from Sony (get it here). You'll then connect your handset to your computer and follow the instructions, as soon as you're finished you should have Android 4.0 up and running.
