Instagram: No, We Didn't Just Lose 25% Of Our Users - Business ...

Instagram has responded to yesterday's odd report that it lost 25% of its active users.

"This data is inaccurate," an Instagram spokesperson told Sam Biddle at Gizmodo. "We continue to see strong and steady growth in both registered and active users of Instagram."

A minor kerfuffle kicked up when AppData showed Instagram's daily active users dropping sharply on Christmas day. AppData tracks usage through Facebook log-ins, so it's absolute numbers are useless, but its trends should be informative.

For some reason AppData told the New York Post that it thought the reason for the steep usage decline was Instagram's change in terms of service. On December 17, Instagram updated its terms of service with scary language that suggested it was going to take users' photos and sell them as advertising. Four days later, Instagram walked back that language.

It didn't make any sense to blame the terms of service controversy since it was a full week after it started that AppData showed a drop. It also didn't make sense to see a decline on Christmas since lots of people were taking pictures of their family, their new toys, photos of photos of themselves as little kids, and posting them to Instagram.

If anything, there seems to be something wrong with AppData's data. Robin Wauters at The Next Web notes that AppData data shows the same sort of steep drop for Pinterest, Spotify, Farmville 2, and many other apps, on Christmas day.

SUVs: Big Car And Big Responsibility

SUVs are big and people bought them because of that fact. They wanted big. "It's safer!" they said. "I can see better!" And best of all it will "protect my family in a crash."

Of course for those people who ran over their own children with those SUVs? That's not due to their poor decision making, or life choices, that's the automotive industry's fault.

It's a horrible moment of neglect, but the automotive manufacturers and the public should not be the ones to shoulder the burden, sorry but no. When you choose to buy a bigger-than-needed vehicle then you choose a bigger-than-average risk. That's yours. I never chose to own an SUV, my bumper is all of a foot off the ground. I can see clearly out of my mirrors and the rear view. I also take the time to check, every day, every time I back up. There are lots of small children in my neighborhood, I even stop before I exit my own driveway just to be certain someone doesn't dart out from behind a tree, bush or on a bike.

Nothing replaces caution, no cameras, no beepers, nor warning lights. If you have two kids with you then check that they're buckled in properly before rolling into reverse. Take your time, driving, as we all know, has many dangers and rushing any part of the process isn't something industry could or should cure. That's driver responsibility. It's also something to think about next time you want something you don't really need.

DirecTV 'price adjustment' will raise rates about 4.5 percent in February

DirecTV 'price adjustment' will raise prices about 45 percent in February

DirecTV announced today that it will raise its prices effected February 7, 2013, with the average customer's bill going up about 4.5 percent. The card shown above displays the new rates (hit the source link to see them all) which it claims are up less than cable competitor's price hikes, and are pushed by programming costs that have gone up eight percent. The last time we noted an increase in prices, DirecTV had just added a slew of HD channels. This time, it comes after a year that's seen a number of DVR upgrades, more new channels, a lower price for Sunday Ticket, the launch DirecTV Everywhere features and, of course, a battle over programming costs with Viacom. We predicted that last bit would be reflected sooner or later in a pricing adjustment and it appears the time has come. So tell us DirecTV customers, are the new features, and keeping all those channels worth an increase to you, or are you thinking of moving on?

Foreclosure Cleaning: 10 Easy Small Business Networking Tips ...

10 Tips to ?Easy Networking? Tips to Help You Grow Your Small Business

Below are ten easy networking tips to help you spread the word about your small business and ultimately land more clients.

1. Remember, networking is about developing small business relationships. Interact genuinely and honestly and it will go a long way in building long-term foreclosure cleanup relationships.

2. Start out with a goal when you attend a networking event. (Also see number eight below when it comes to having a networking goal.)

3. Participate, participate, participate.? Interact in as many small business networking opportunities as you possibly can to make contact with potential future foreclosure cleaning clients.

4. Volunteer at organizations you have an interest in helping.? You will inevitably meet other entrepreneurs who share your similar interests. Volunteering will make it easier to network and grow your REO trash out company.

5. Ask questions that are open-ended when meeting new people when networking and working the room of a gathering.? This tactic will allow for an even give and take and will open the door for the person you are speaking with to share plenty of information about them and their business. Also, this will go a long way in making your follow-up and follow-thru easier. For example, when you send the person you?ve met a ?glad to meet you? follow-up note card a few days later, you can say, ?It was nice hearing about your expansion plans. Feel free to contact me if I can help in any way.?

6. Be a valuable resource to those you meet when moving around the room of an event.? Listen to other entrepreneurs so you can really decipher what other small business owners may need from you and your business in the future. You?ll be better prepared to make the appropriate services available to them. The key is simply to listen.

7. Make yourself and your interaction memorable.? There will be many other small business owners at the networking event.? Have a unique foreclosure cleanup business card, share unique stories, provide memorable give-a-ways, if appropriate, so individuals remember you and your foreclosure cleaning company.

8. Be clear about what you want to gain from the business outing. For example, do you want to circle the room and have meaningful contact with 10 new people so you can add them to your database of potential cleanup clients? Do you want to have conversations that will open the door to an in-person meeting beyond the event so you can discuss a mutually beneficial relationship? Have a goal in mind as you enter the doors of the event.

9. Follow up within a week or so with other small business owners you?ve met at the social/business event. ?You can give a quick call saying, ?It was really nice to meet you, let?s stay in touch.? Or, you can send a quick letter or note card thanking them for taking a moment to speak with you. After you?ve met a small business owner at an outing, your second ?touch? will be a warm one. Don?t miss an opportunity by NOT following up within a week or so after the event with a card or letter from our foreclosure clean-up company.

10. Have fun, be positive and relax.? You will enjoy the event and people will naturally gravitate to you and your foreclosure cleaning business.

Good luck networking to grow your business over the next several months.
