No Buddy Left Behind: Bringing US Troops' Dogs and Cats Safely Home from the Combat Zone (Audiobook) By Terri Crisp, C. J. Hurn
English | 2011 | ISBN: 1455121630 | 8 hours and 19 minutes | M4B | 219 MB
The love of a dog or cat helps heal soldiers' emotional trauma. One very special woman and program reunites them after the war.
''I have sacrificed a lot to serve my country. All that I ask is to be allowed to bring home the incredible dog that wandered into my life here in Iraq and prevented me from becoming terribly calloused towards life.'' --a soldier requesting help from Operation Baghdad Pups

No Buddy Left Behind is an animal book with a difference. It is not only about rescued dogs and cats but also about US soldiers trying to survive the horrors of war and readjust to life back home. It unveils the life-altering relationships American troops serving in the Middle East share with the stray dogs and cats they rescue from the brutalities of war. Overcoming monumental obstacles, Terri Crisp makes it her mission to save these wartime ''buddies,'' get them out of danger, and bring them home to the soldiers who love them.

So, how does someone get animals out of a country at war when normal resources are lacking and every step of a plan to transport animals could get you arrested, kidnapped, or blown apart? As Crisp soon learns, each rescue mission from first to last is a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants experience, and no animal is truly safe until its paws touch American soil. Terri and her team have saved the lives of 223 dogs and 42 cats befriended by military personnel since February 2008 -- and No Buddy Left Behind finally tells this story.

In the last decades of the nineteenth century, thanks to the Comillas Lord, the town became a hub of the?incipient Catalan Modernism. The seminary began with some sketches of Jesuit and Engineer Miguel de?Alcolado, later on Joan Martorell and Lluis Domenech i Montaner started to work in the project giving the?building the monumental and desired style.

    ? Duccio Malagamba

The building has an academic style plan, with two cloisters with functional rooms and a central body with?significant institutional spaces.?After its abandonment in the 90s, it was in a terrible condition. The most remarkable architectural spaces,?the lobby, the main hall and the church facades had minimal alterations, although they presented a?significant deterioration due to time and lack of use. The rest of the spaces had suffered multiple?interventions that trumped the apparent clarity that promises cloistered architectural type. The diseases?caused by an extremely experimental construction at the time demanded swift action.?The project proposes two complementary intervention degrees in two different areas of the building.

    ? Duccio Malagamba

The project proposes two complementary intervention degrees in two different areas of the building.?On one hand, the maintenance and conservation of most artistic spaces, located in the central body,?with extensive renovation to restore its original splendor. The intervention is enriched with small specific?actions intended to qualify and reclaim the spaces. We open holes looking for permeability between?parts of the building, the church gets greater formal autonomy. We design new walls and floors which?naturally mixed with the modernist elements and we recreate a magical space in the mansard on the?auditorium.

    ? Duccio Malagamba

On the other hand, it raises a more intensive rehabilitation in the cloisters, trying to transform its oppressive?character. We consider there is no need here to keep the same effort restorer we decide to operate?more freely, introducing new programs and technologies as required. We demolish most of the building?and built in vacuum. The brick walls remaining acquire all its expressiveness. We solve most of the project?technical aspects with a new wall, following the traces of the old and obsolete intermediate one.

    Ground Floor Plan

The new wall articulates the relationship between visual and functional halls and cloisters, through the?systematic order of their holes. The wall consists of two canvases where white concrete slabs are?supported and they also brace the restored original facades. The wall section organized the intervention?and allows for its hollow interior, breathe and run all the installations. A smooth wall, as a ?stucco??concrete reflects light and contrasts with the marked masonry texture of the original walls. The wall is?folded on the top floor creating a large canopy.

There, we create a glazed perimeter gallery that?enhances the functionality of the rooms of this floor, qualified by the demolitions of the mansard slab,?converting the attics in unexpected skylights.?The different floors were arranged according to the new wall and the position of the cores and services,?which are arranged precisely at the towers, generating flexible spaces that can be allocated to multiple?uses. The new spaces are complemented by the church, which should become the great hall.

    ? Duccio Malagamba

New uses require a large space for service installations. This new building appears under the old football?pitch, taking advantage of the topography, in a long block with the same length as the Seminar.?In the rehabilitation of the central body and the facades, it is worth remark the different structural?interventions, artisanal glass restorations, paintings, bronzes, plasters ? and the emergence of new?materials in situ terrazzo, walnut baseboards, Cumella tiles ? In the cloisters, the concrete of the slabs?and the wall gain all the attention, contrasting with the whitewashed historic factory. Pavements are?made of Douglas pine and we solve the roof with deep beams of reinforced masonry.?In the first phase, it has been rehabilitated the eastern cloister and the central body. We hope that we?can continue the works to recover this important building.

Ex-MLB All-Star Returns To Baseball After Prison Release

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Former major league pitcher Ugueth Urbina returned to baseball Friday after serving 7 1/2 years in prison for the attempted murder of five workers on his family's ranch.

Before taking the field in his native Venezuela to play for the Lions of Caracas, Urbina described himself as "more mature" and said he was "very excited to play baseball again."

"I'm excited to be here," Urbina told reporters at the University Stadium in Caracas, where the Lions played the Zulia Eagles.

The 38-year-old pitcher was released from prison Sunday after serving roughly half of his 14-year sentence for attempted murder during a dispute over a gun on Oct. 16, 2005.

Urbina was found guilty of attacking and injuring workers with a machete. Several other men participated in the attack at his family's ranch, located about 25 miles from Caracas.

Urbina, who pitched for the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies, has repeatedly denied involvement with the incident that landed him in prison, saying he was sleeping at the time of the attack.

A two-time All-Star, Urbina saved 237 big league games from 1995-2005. He had two saves in the 2003 World Series to help the Marlins beat the New York Yankees, and last pitched in the majors with the Phillies in 2005.

Urbina told reporters he hopes to play professional baseball in the United States again.

"The first order of business is pitching in Venezuela," he said.

More serious earthquakes predicted in the Himalayas

Dec. 28, 2012 ? A research team led by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has discovered that massive earthquakes in the range of 8 to 8.5 magnitudes on the Richter scale have left clear ground scars in the central Himalayas.

This ground-breaking discovery has huge implications for the area along the front of the Himalayan Mountains, given that the region has a population density similar to that of New York City.

NTU Professor Paul Tapponnier, who is recognised as a leading scientist in the field of neotectonics, said that the existence of such devastating quakes in the past means that quakes of the same magnitude could happen again in the region in future, especially in areas which have yet to have their surface broken by a temblor.

Published recently in Nature Geosciences, the study by NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) in Singapore and colleagues in Nepal and France, showed that in 1255 and 1934, two great earthquakes ruptured the surface of the earth in the Himalayas. This runs contrary to what scientists have previously thought.

Massive earthquakes are not unknown in the Himalayas, as quakes in 1897, 1905, 1934 and 1950 all had magnitudes between 7.8 and 8.9, each causing tremendous damage. But they were previously thought not to have broken the earth's surface -- classified as blind quakes -- which are much more difficult to track.

However, Prof Tapponnier said that by combining new high resolution imagery and state of the art dating techniques, they could show that the 1934 earthquake did indeed rupture the surface, breaking the ground over a length of more than 150 kilometres, essentially south of the part of the range that harbours Mt Everest.

This break formed along the main fault in Nepal that currently marks the boundary between the Indian and Asian tectonic plates -- also known as the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) fault.

Using radiocarbon dating of offset river sediments and collapsed hill-slope deposits, the research team managed to separate several episodes of tectonic movement on this major fault and pin the dates of the two quakes, about 7 centuries apart.

"The significance of this finding is that earthquakes of magnitude 8 to 8.5 may return at most twice per millennium on this stretch of the fault, which allows for a better assessment of the risk they pose to the surrounding communities," said Prof Tapponnier.

Prof Tapponnier warns that the long interval between the two recently discovered earthquake ruptures does not mean people should be complacent, thinking that there is still time before the next major earthquake happens in the region.

"This does not imply that the next mega-earthquake in the Himalayas will occur many centuries from now because we still do not know enough about adjacent segments of the MFT Mega-thrust," Prof Tapponier explains.

"But it does suggest that areas west or east of the 1934 Nepal ground rupture are now at greater risk of a major earthquake, since there are little or no records of when last earth shattering temblor happened in those two areas."

The next step for Prof Tapponnier and his EOS scientists is to uncover the full extent of such fault ruptures, which will then allow them to build a more comprehensive model of earthquake hazard along the Himalayan front.

About the NTU's Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS)

EOS is a premier research institute at NTU, Singapore, which conducts fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies.

UK's Pearson invests in Barnes & Noble's Nook

(AP) ? Pearson, the U.K. publisher and education company, is to take a 5 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's NOOK e-reader as technology companies seek new inroads into the potentially lucrative business of digital textbooks for schools.

Pearson PLC will pay $89.5 million cash for a 5 percent stake in NOOK Media LLC which includes the bookseller's e-reader and tablets, its digital bookstore and its 674 stores serving U.S. colleges. Barnes & Noble will hold 78.2 percent of the business and Microsoft will have about 16.8 percent, the company said Friday.

Major tech companies have looked for inroads into the industry, seeing tablets like the iPad and the NOOK as replacements for the dozens of books that students must lug to and from school each day.

Walter Isaacson in his biography of Steve Jobs wrote about meetings between the co-founder of Apple Inc. and major publishers to accomplish just that before his death last year.

Janney Capital Markets described the tie-up between Pearson and Barnes & Noble as an "online education dream team."

"After this investment from Pearson, it is more clear that Nook Media has its sight set on transforming the way education is administered in the U.S. and around the world," analyst David Strasser wrote.

Pearson is the largest higher educational publisher in the world and the largest in kindergarten-through-high school publisher in the United States, Janney said. The company, which also owns the Financial Times and whose Penguin book brand is in the process of being merged with Random House, reported that its textbooks and training made 1.9 billion pounds ($3 billion) in revenue the first six months of 2012.

Will Ethridge, CEO of Pearson North America, says his company had worked with Barnes & Noble for decades and have invested heavily in providing engaging and effective digital reading experiences.

"It is another example of our strategy of making our content and services broadly available to students and faculty through a wide range of distribution partners," Ethridge said.

Barnes & Noble Inc. has invested heavily in the Nook e-reader. It has faced tough competition from online retailers like Amazon.com and discount stores, with shoppers moving away from traditional books in favor of electronic books.
