$1 per person health insurance fee will pay for medical research ...

WASHINGTON ? Starting in 2012, the government will charge a new fee to your health insurance plan for research to find out which drugs, medical procedures, tests and treatments work best. But what will Americans do with the answers?

The goal of the research, part of a little-known provision of President Barack Obama's health care law, is to answer such basic questions as whether that new prescription drug advertised on TV really works better than an old generic costing much less.

But in the politically charged environment surrounding health care, the idea of medical effectiveness research is eyed with suspicion. The insurance fee could be branded a tax and drawn into the vortex of election-year politics.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute ? a quasi-governmental agency created by Congress to carry out the research ? has yet to commission a single head-to-head comparison, although its director is anxious to begin.

The government is already providing the institute with some funding: The $1-per-person insurance fee goes into effect in 2012. But the Treasury Department says it's not likely to be collected for another year, though insurers would still owe the money. The fee doubles to $2 per covered person in its second year and thereafter rises with inflation. The IRS is expected to issue guidance to insurers within the next six months.

"The more concerning thing is not the institute itself, but how the findings will be used in other areas," said Kathryn Nix, a policy analyst for the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. "Will they be used to make coverage determinations?"

The institute's director, Dr. Joe Selby, said patients and doctors will make the decisions, not his organization. "We are not a policy-making body; our role is to make the evidence available," said Selby, a primary care physician and medical researcher,

But insurance industry representatives say they expect to use the research and work with employers to fine-tune workplace health plans. Employees and family members could be steered to hospitals and doctors who follow the most effective treatment methods. Patients going elsewhere could face higher copayments, similar to added charges they now pay for "non-preferred" drugs on their insurance plans.

Major insurers already are carrying out their own effectiveness research, but it lacks the credibility of government-sponsored studies.

Not long ago, so-called "comparative effectiveness" research enjoyed support from lawmakers in both parties. After all, much of the medical research that doctors and consumers rely on now is financed by drug companies and medical device manufacturers, who have a built-in interest in the findings. And a drug maker only has to show that a new medicine is more effective than a sugar pill ? not a competing medication ? to win government approval for marketing.

The 2009 economic stimulus bill included $1.1 billion for medical effectiveness research, mainly through the National Institutes of Health. It was not considered particularly controversial. But things changed during the congressional health care debate, after former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin made the claim, now widely debunked, that Obama and the Democrats were setting up "death panels" to ration care.

As a result, lawmakers hedged the new institute with caveats. It was set up as an independent nonprofit organization, with a .org Internet address instead of .gov. The government cannot dictate Selby's research agenda. And there are limitations on how the Health and Human Services department can use the research findings in decisions that affect Medicare and Medicaid.

Selby says the institute is taking seriously the term "patient-centered" in its name. Patients will not be merely subjects of research; they and their representatives will be involved in setting the agenda and overseeing the process.

"We are talking about patients as partners in the research," said Selby. Findings will be presented in clear language ? a kind of Consumer Reports approach ? so that patients and doctors can easily draw on them to make decisions.

"Our goal, our hope, is that over time, by involving patients in research, two things will happen," said Selby. "One is that we will start asking questions in a more practical fashion, so the results would speak more consistently to questions that patients want to know the answers to. And two is that, by our example of involving patients in the research, trust will rise." He expects to unveil the institute's proposed research agenda in the next few weeks.

Former Medicare administrator Gail Wilensky says that agenda should focus on high-cost procedures and drugs on which the medical community has not developed a consensus, and which have widely different patterns of use around the country. A Republican, Wilensky believes opposition to the institute's work is shortsighted.

"This just strikes me as a component of finding ways to treat better and spend smarter," she said.

7 hurt as bombers target Islamic school in Nigeria

Six children and a teacher were wounded when assailants threw a homemade bomb at an Islamic school in a predominantly Christian area, police in Nigeria said Wednesday.

The attack took place in the city of Sapele, as about 50 children were gathered for an Arabic class.

Delta State police spokesman Charles Muka said that the attackers drove by a school and threw homemade explosives into a classroom Tuesday morning.

Story: Nigeria fears more bombs after 39 killed in Christmas attacks

The wounded children were all aged younger than nine, Reuters reported. At least one was aged four.

Investigators suspect a local vigilante group was behind the incident, Muka added.

The latest incident follows coordinated attacks by radical Islamist militants on Christmas Day, which killed at least 39 people.

Analysts say the attacks risk reviving sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

The radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram? has claimed responsbility for the church attacks. Boko Haram aims to impose Islamic Shariah law across Nigeria.

Many northern Nigerian Christians fear the Christmas Day bombings could lead to a religious war in Africa's most populous country.

Meanwhile, a family of four was killed in a machete attack on Wednesday in Nigeria's ethnically and religiously mixed Plateau state ? on the threshold of the country's largely Muslim north and its mostly Christian south.

There was no immediate suggestion the killings had any link to Sunday's church bombings.

Conn. house where 5 died in fire is torn down (AP)

STAMFORD, Conn. ? A house severely damaged in a Christmas morning fire that killed three children and two grandparents, one of whom worked as Santa Claus at Saks Fifth Avenue, has been torn down.

The building department determined that the $1.7 million house was unsafe and ordered it razed, Stamford fire chief Antonio Conte said.

The home's owner, advertising executive Madonna Badger, and her male acquaintance escaped from the fire. But Badger's three daughters ? a 10-year-old and 7-year-old twins ? and her parents, who were visiting for the holiday, died, police said.

Neighbors said they awoke to the sound of screaming shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday and rushed outside to help, but could do nothing as flames devoured the large, turreted home.

Police said the male acquaintance who escaped the blaze with Badger was a contractor working on the home. He was also hospitalized but his condition was not released.

Interviews with them will be finished Monday, Conte said. He had no details on the investigation.

A spokeswoman for Saks Fifth Avenue confirmed in a statement that Badger's father, Lomer Johnson, had worked as a Santa this year at its flagship store in Manhattan.

"Mr. Johnson was Saks Fifth Avenue's beloved Santa, and we are heartbroken about this terrible tragedy," spokeswoman Julia Bently said.

Badger, an ad executive in the fashion industry, is the founder of New York City-based Badger & Winters Group. A supervisor at Stamford Hospital said she was treated and discharged by Sunday evening. Her whereabouts Monday was unknown.

Property records show Badger bought the five-bedroom, waterfront home for $1.7 million last year. The house was situated in Shippan Point, a wealthy neighborhood that juts into Long Island Sound.

The lot where the house once stood was covered with charred debris and cordoned off by police with tape on Monday. Passers-by left bouquets, stuffed animals and candles nearby.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a former mayor of Stamford, offered his condolences to Badger and her family in a statement and said her loss "defies explanation."

The fire was Stamford's deadliest since a 1987 blaze that also killed five people, Conte said.

Michael Ungar Dead: Canadian Skydiver Killed On Landing In Perris, California (VIDEO)

PERRIS, Calif. -- The experienced skydiver who may have been attempting a risky maneuver when he died on landing at a Southern California parachuting center has been identified as a Canadian man, the coroner's office said Wednesday.

It was the sixth skydiving death at the popular Southern California sport parachuting facility in the past 15 months.

Michael Ungar, 32, of Ontario, died Tuesday afternoon at Perris Valley Skydiving after landing hard at the Riverside County sport parachuting base about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. His hometown was not immediately available.

Unger, who was injured during a difficult aerial maneuver, landed in a shallow pond at 2:01 p.m. and friends pulled him out of the water, the Riverside County coroner and Perris police said in a news release.

Ungar's parachute was open and he may have been attempting an aggressive "swooping" maneuver involving a high-speed dive to skim over the ground before landing.

Skydiving center manager Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld said Ungar sometimes worked as an instructor at Skydive Hollister on California's Central Coast. Ungar, who had 2,000 jumps to his credit, was visiting the Perris area and had rarely, if ever, jumped at the facility, Brodsky-Chenfeld said.

Ungar's parachute was open and he was circling as he neared the ground, witness Jack Nix of Fontana told the Riverside Press-Enterprise. But when he did not pull up or turn his body upright from parallel to the ground, Nix said he knew the skydiver was in trouble.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the air safety regulator only investigates such deaths to determine whether the parachute was packed properly by a certified packer.

Perris is regarded as one of the world's foremost facilities and has more than 140,000 jumps per year, Brodsky-Chenfeld said, which is about 5 percent of the 3 million jumps nationally in the United States.

It has been particularly difficult year at the facility.

In April, two skydivers collided, killing Jacob Jensen, 32, of Denmark. The other man survived critical injuries.

In March, two skydivers were killed when their parachutes deflated and they fell 300 feet.

In February, a 41-year-old Australian woman died after failing to open a backup chute.

In September 2010, a 51-year-old Russian man died after a solo jump. The man's body was not found until two months later by a farmer plowing a field. His parachutes had not been deployed.

There have been 14 deaths at the Perris Valley Airport since 2000.

Jumpers continued to skydive Tuesday following the accident.

FBI shooting range is popular deer hangout

QUANTICO, Va. (AP) ? Call it a playground for Bambi and G-Men, where imaginary criminals are hunted and deer are the spectators.

The 547-acre FBI Academy, where some of the nation's best marksmen fire off more than 1 million bullets every month, happens to be one of the safest places for deer during hunting season.

The property on the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Va., is home to some of the FBI's most elite forces and training programs as well as a de facto wildlife refuge where deer, fox, wild turkeys, groundhogs and vultures roam fearless and free.

In recent years, a black bear was spotted running across a parking lot, and a groundhog cornered an FBI agent coming out of the cafeteria, hoping to score some human food, FBI spokesman Kurt Crawford said. Turkey vultures are often seen perched atop the 500,000-square-foot national crime lab where the FBI analyzes evidence, including the remains of the former al-Qaida leader in Iraq.

The wild animals are as much a fixture at the academy as the hostage rescue team and criminal profilers.

The most common furry friends on the sprawling campus some 30 miles outside Washington are the deer, a regular at the shooting ranges, driving courses and physical training trails.

On a December afternoon, deer grazed above one of the academy's 16 practice shooting ranges. They stood just 15 feet away from the paper targets. Nearby, shots popped loudly from a Colt M4 Carbine rifle, and the white-tailed deer did not flinch.

"They're pretty immune to the sound," said Sean Boyle, supervisory special agent bomb technician and principal firearms instructor for the Critical Incident Response Group based at the academy. The deer typically graze on top of the berm, about 15 feet away from the targets and rarely go directly in the line of fire. Boyle said he doesn't recall an instance where a deer was shot accidentally.

"It's like they think, 'We've pushed the limit for this far, and all our generations have pushed the limit for this far,'" Boyle said. "They're just so docile around here. They don't know what a gun is."

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries does not keep direct tabs on the deer population at the FBI academy, but a spokeswoman said statewide the deer population has remained about the same over the past decade, partly because of regulated hunting. Licensed deer hunters are allowed on parts of the Marine Corps base but not at the academy where the FBI does not hunt its animals.

At the FBI Academy, the deer have even become part of the training in some of the driving courses, said Tim Moles, the supervisory special agent who oversees the Tactical and Emergency Vehicle Operations Center, where recruits learn to avoid crashing their cars and conduct surveillance without being spotted. The deer are convenient when recruits learn to avoid collisions, Moles said. "There's times when it seems like they're playing chicken with us," Moles said. "We respect them because they can do damage. We'd rather avoid all deer stories in this end of the academy."

For the most part, the deer have stayed out of trouble. Twice, however, deer have eaten freshly-planted pansies at the academy's 9/11 memorial courtyard, Crawford said. Eventually a fence was built to keep the flowers off limits.

Deer have been known to interrupt physical training, too.

"We've had the deer walk across the middle of the track during the 300-meter sprint," said Susann Dreiling, unit chief of the academy's physical training unit.

To become an agent, recruits must pass a physical fitness test. They are scored on how fast they can run and how many push-ups and sit-ups they perform. Sometimes, training will involve running a quarter-mile path along the lake area of the academy, stopping for push-ups, running some more and breaking to box, Dreiling said.

During these exercises, a mother and her fawns are often close by.

"They just stand there and watch as if they're evaluating them," Dreiling said, "just like the instructors are."

Registration starts for Iran's parliamentary poll (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Iran on Saturday began registering potential candidates for March parliamentary elections, a vote that will be especially hard fought between supporters and opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad within the conservative camp.

The country's major reformist groups are staying out of the race, claiming that basic requirements for free and fair elections have not been met.

In their absence, the poll for the 290-seat assembly is likely to pit hard-line candidates who remain staunchly loyal to the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against conservatives who support Ahmadinejad.

Whatever the outcome, the vote is unlikely to change Iran's course. The country is a theocracy and Khamenei has final say on all state matters.

The March 2 elections will be the first nationwide balloting since Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009, which the opposition said was heavily rigged. That vote set off months of near-daily protests in which hundreds of thousands took to the streets in support of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi who they claimed was the rightful winner.

The wave of protests was the biggest challenge to Iran's clerical leadership since it came to power in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. But a heavy crackdown suppressed the protests, and many in the opposition ? from midlevel political figures to street activists, journalists and human rights workers ? were arrested. The opposition has not been able to hold a major protest since December 2009.

For the March elections, the Interior Ministry is in charge of the weeklong registration process. All Iranian nationals between 30 and 75 years of age who hold a master's degree and have "proven themselves to be loyal" to Khamenei are allowed to run. Once submitted, candidacies have to be approved by the hard-line constitutional watchdog known as the Guardian Council.

The council's chief, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, has said the reformists, whom he called traitors, need not participate. His statement was widely seen as an indication the hard-line body would disqualify anyone perceived as a reformist from running.

In the previous parliamentary elections, in 2008, the council disqualified thousands of reformist candidates.

Former President Mohammad Khatami, a reformist, recently demanded that political prisoners be freed and that Mousavi and another opposition leader, Mahdi Karroubi, be released from house arrest. Khatami said those were preconditions for reformists participating in the March polling. None have so far been met.

Ali Mohammad Gharibani, a prominent reformist leader, confirmed last week that the reformists will stay out of the race.

"Despite efforts ... to create an appropriate election climate, unfortunately more restrictions have been imposed," said Gharibani, who runs the Reformist Front Coordination Council. "Therefore, the council has decided that it won't issue any election list and won't support anyone."

A major reformist party, the Islamic Revolution Mojahedeen Organization, or IRMO, said in a statement released Saturday that it would also boycott the vote. The statement was released outside Iran and posted on its website, which is blocked inside Iran.

"IRMO ... won't field any candidates in this sham election and won't vote. It calls on all reformist forces not to give in to ... pressure from the rulers who have spoken with the language of force and deception to the people ... and continue their civil disobedience by refusing to register," it said.

The group said reformist parties including IRMO have been forcefully dissolved, and had their websites blocked and their leaders jailed, leaving their sympathizers with no way to engage in free political activity.

Hard-liners say the threat to the ruling system now comes from Ahmadinejad's supporters. The president has been the target of a backlash since April for trying to impose too much autonomy in how the government is run, including defying Khamenei on his choice for the powerful post of intelligence minister.

Dozens of Ahmadinejad's allies have been detained over the past months ? including four senior government officials during the summer ? in the evolving power struggle.

(This version CORRECTS that four senior government officials were detained in the summer).)

iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak: Apple's Updates May Hamper Pod2g, MuscleNerd's Efforts

Apple users, who are using the Cupertino-based tech giant's latest mobile operating system, have been waiting for an untethered jailbreak. But unlike the earlier jailbreaks, the new untethered jailbreak (whenever it is released) will not be able to make all jailbreak fans happy.

Finding a jailbreak for Apple's mobile operating systems had never been easy for hackers. However, in the case of iOS 5, it became more complicated due to the two new devices supported by the new A5 processor.

This is the first time when Chronic Dev-team's French member, Pod2g, has given his work to his team members and taken up a new task.

Pod2g in his recent blog post said: "I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that Chronic-dev could help me."

So here is what I did:

"I gave all the details to the chronic dev team so that can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 JB ASAP.

I'll put all my energy from now on on the A5."

Like us on Facebook

Hackers, while working hard to find an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5, had been trying their luck in finding exploits which can jailbreak A5 processor devices - iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Pod2g also succeeded in cache related problem in the A5 processor and working hard to get the final bootrom-exploit, but one more thing which can hamper Pod2g and MuscleNerd's hard work is updates of iOS 5. Apple, to solve battery issues related iPhone 4S running on iOS 5, will be releasing new updates of the operating software which can carry a patch for the new jailbreak.

The long wait of all the Apple device users to perform the jailbreak is going to be over soon as two hackers from two different Dev-teams - MuscleNerd and Pod2g - are working round the clock to find the crucial jailbreaking milestones.

Right now, two jailbreak programs are available and both are not untethered, and don't work on iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Redsn0w is a tethered jailbreak - the user always has to connect his device to computer whenever he reboots it. ?A semi-tethered jailbreak reduces the problems but still can't replace the need of an untethered jailbreak.

oth the jailbreaks are compatible with the?iPhone?3GS (old and new bootrom), the?iPhone?4, the?iPod?Touch 3G, the?iPod?Touch 4 and the?iPad?1G. They won't work on the iPhone 4S and the?iPad?2 because of the A5 processor.

Is Your Business Planning to Hire in 2012?

American Express OPEN recently took a look back at its past 10 years? worth of Small Business Monitor surveys, with a particular focus on hiring. The resulting new report,?Trends in Small Business Hiring: 2002-2011, hones in on business owners? responses when asked whether they plan to hire new full-time or part-time employees, cut staff, or keep the same staffing levels over the next six months. The survey used a ?net hiring score,? subtracting the percent of firms that plan to cut staff from the percent planning to hire.

hiring

Here?s some of what they found:

Overall, small business owners tend to ?hold the line.? No matter what the economic situation, over the past 10 years the percentage of entrepreneurs who are planning to add employees has consistently surpassed the percentage planning cutbacks. This doesn?t surprise me, as entrepreneurs who work closely with their teams are likely to do everything in their power to avoid layoffs.

The bigger the small business, the more likely it is to hire. Over the 10-year period, companies with 20 or more workers, or sales of $500,000 and up, were consistently more likely to plan to hire than other groups.

That?s also not surprising, but what is more unexpected is that the smallest companies?those with under 10 employees?were far more likely to fall in line with the hiring average. In contrast, companies with 10 to 19 employees have consistently been the most volatile. In Fall 2006, Fall 2007 and again in Fall 2010, their hiring plans fell far below the national average. Why? Perhaps these companies are in the ?growth pains? stage of business where it?s often difficult to judge hiring needs.

So what?s the current outlook? In the Fall 2011 survey, 31 percent of business owners surveyed were planning to hire new employees while 9 percent planned to cut back, for a net hiring score of +22. American Express OPEN notes that while regional differences in hiring have lessened since the 2008 recession, industry?differences have increased.

The Fall 2011 survey reports a net hiring score of +28 score among small manufacturers, +26 among business/professional service firms, +17 among retailers and +17 in all other firms.

How do small businesses? hiring plans compare to those of big business? In the most recent Manpower Employment Outlook Survey of global companies, 14 percent of U.S. employers surveyed expected to add staff in the first quarter of 2012, while 9 percent planned to cut, for a Net Employment Outlook of +5 percent (or +9 percent if seasonally adjusted). Some 70 percent planned no change, while 7 percent were uncertain about their hiring plans. This 7 percent was an increase from 3 percent in the last survey and was a historically high level of uncertainty.

What does it all mean? Whether you?re a big business sitting on unprecedented amounts of cash, or a small entrepreneur with far less room for error, employers are still fearful of hiring in this uncertain economy. Still, small business owners are significantly more optimistic about hiring, showing that their reputations as job creators and engines of the economy are well deserved.

Researchers from the University of Southampton have contributed to a major international United Nation's (UN) report into the current status of the world's land and water resources for food and agriculture.

Dr Craig Hutton, Professor Mike Clark, both from the University's GeoData Institute, and demographer Dr Fiifi Amoako Johnson contributed as authors as well external editors to the recent United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation publication, 'State of the World's Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture' (SOLAW).

The report notes that with the task of feeding a world population expected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, food production is projected to increase by about 70 per cent globally and nearly 100 per cent in developing countries. This incremental demand for food, together with demand from other competing uses, will place unprecedented pressure on many agricultural production systems across the world. These 'systems at risk' are facing growing competition for land and water resources and they are often constrained by unsustainable agricultural practices.

The University of Southampton team substantially contributed to the development of spatial statistics and mapping of poverty and environmental variables, as well as providing strategic contribution to the overall message of the document.

Dr Craig Hutton, says:

"The first issue of SOLAW, which complements other State of the World reports published regularly by FAO, is intended to inform public debate and policy-making at national and international levels. The University of Southampton now has a substantial international profile in food security, poverty and resource management, particularly in the context of climate change. The GeoData Institute has been working closely with the FAO for a number of years in this field across a number of international settings."

Why Social Media Is Killing Your Business

If you read business articles, you've seen the enthusiasm about using social media. Probably 99 percent of magazine articles, blogs and commentaries insist that you need to be on social media. But before you throw your efforts into building a buzz on the social media bandwagon, you may want to re-think your efforts.

Too many people are launching social media efforts instead of using good old-fashioned networking. (Remember, when we used to meet people face to face and shake hands?) Going completely digital and bypassing face time is detrimental to your business for a number of reasons.

  • All that social media makes you feel bad about yourself. Check out the majority of posts on Twitter and Facebook, and you?ll see that they are overwhelmingly positive. Nobody wants to share their misery with their audience. So post after post is a celebration. Reading all those amazing things can make you feel as if you aren?t keeping up. So recognize that social media is not a representation of reality. Read it less and you will feel better about yourself.

  • It?s easy, but is that a good thing? Many people, perhaps even you, feel that communication on social media is just as good as?or perhaps even better than?being face to face. After all, it?s fast, it?s direct, it?s easy. Sure, it requires less effort on everyone?s part, but is that necessarily a positive? If your competitor meets with that client that you?ve been pursuing on Twitter face to face, they have a major advantage. Real people are trusted more than electronics. And your Twitter pal could be a spammer who is actually trying to sell you something.

  • You lose efficiency. You may think you?re saving time by using social media sites, but they can be addicting. Before you know it, an hour has gone by and your productivity tanks. I?ll bet you are most productive when no one distracts you and your e-mail is turned off. It isn?t much of a stretch to see that fewer distractions occurring less frequently result in more productivity. Social media, with its constant stream of updates, kills efficiency and productivity.

  • Relationships get shorter and shorter. Social media is great for building an instant relationship, albeit a shallow one. But to communicate with more and more people, your connections become more and more shallow. Deep relationships that are long-term and trusting are the foundation of a great business. Social medial alone might be a quick way to build a house of cards, but it is a house of cards, nonetheless.

All the social media in the world can never replace simply meeting someone face to face and having a conversation. Social media lacks the depth of real meetings. Through social media, everyone is a screen name, so relationships stay distant. That makes it challenging to move them forward so they can flourish.

When you opt for a real networking opportunity, you have a chance to get to know someone and make a connection. Those connections are bonding and will help your business to thrive. Get back to the basics of looking people in the eye, and see how much better you and your prospects feel as a result.

Asthma Drugs in Pregnancy Might Pose Risk for Kids (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 16 (HealthDay News) -- Infants born to mothers who use inhaled glucocorticoids -- a class of steroids -- to treat asthma during pregnancy may be at risk for endocrine and metabolic disorders, a new study indicates.

Researchers looked at more than 65,000 mother-child pairs from the Danish National Birth Cohort who were followed from early pregnancy into childhood.

Of the women in the study, about 61,000 (94 percent) had no asthma during pregnancy while almost 4,100 (6 percent) did have asthma during pregnancy. At the end of follow-up, the median age for the children was about 6, with an age range of about 3.5 to 9.

For mothers who used the asthma inhalers, budesonide (Pulmicort) was the most common glucocorticoid.

The use of inhaled glucocorticoids during pregnancy was not associated with an increased risk of most diseases in children, with the exception of endocrine and metabolic disorders.

"Our data are mostly reassuring and support the use of inhaled glucocorticoids during pregnancy," wrote first author Marion Tegethoff, an associate faculty member in clinical psychology and psychiatry at the University of Basel, Switzerland, and colleagues.

The study appears online ahead of print in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Asthma is common in pregnant women and glucocorticoids are the recommended treatment, the researchers noted.

"This is the first comprehensive study of potential effects of glucocorticoid inhalation during pregnancy on the health of offspring, covering a wide spectrum of pediatric diseases," study co-author author Gunther Meinlschmidt, an associate faculty member in clinical psychology and epidemiology, said in a journal news release. "While our results support the use of these widely used asthma treatments during pregnancy, their effect on endocrine and metabolic disturbances during childhood merits further study."

Although the study found an association between inhaler use and certain disorders, it did not show cause and effect.

Fusion Garage's website goes dark -- has it bitten the dust?

Perhaps it's the comeback that wasn't meant to be -- Fusion Garage has apparently silenced its radios for over a week on Twitter, and more than a month on Facebook. Potentially worse, its website is now unreachable, displaying only a "Database connection error." Although its Grid10 tablet was set for a delayed October 1st release, some folks over at The JooJoo Forum and on Fusion Garage's Facebook page are reporting that they've yet to receive their tabs, weeks after placing orders.

We've fielded more than a few concerned tips saying the same, and sadly, that's just the tip of this iceberg, as there's also been mention of slow correspondence from the company, with wishy-washy responses about what's going on. One forum poster mentions eventually hearing back from its public relations agency -- this after contacting FG for order details -- with an indication that a refund is on the way.

We've reached out for an official comment but received nothing but silence. That said, we're hearing we aren't the only ones having a hard time getting in contact with Fusion Garage's executives, leaving us with a sinking suspicion that there will be no third go 'round for the house that Chandra built. Ordered a Grid10 yourself, or still waiting on your free JooJoo replacement? Let us know about your experience in the comments below.

Update: We have a comment from Fusion Garage's PR agency:
Unfortunately, none of our efforts have resulted in any communication from the company to the customers. Given all of this, we don't have any other choice but to cease working with FG effective tomorrow.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Don Trip Raps From The Heart On Cee Lo Collabo

'In real life, I cry too,' Memphis upstart tells Mixtape Daily of revealing family drama on 'Letter to My Son.'
By Rob Markman

Fire Starter: Don Trip
Don Trip would rather make music from his heart than chase a hit, and sure enough, trusting his instincts led the 26-year-old Memphis, Tennessee MC, to his biggest song yet. Trip wrote and recorded the Cee Lo-assisted "Letter to My Son" two years ago after quarreling with his son's mother fought over visitation rights.

"That's my whole aim as an artist, the fact that I'm human," Trip told Mixtape Daily. "We become artists and once we get a celebrity status, we start to act as if we are machines, and we're not. In real life, I cry too.

Now, thanks to the popularity of the track, Trip has signed a record deal with producers Cool & Dre and Interscope Records. " 'Letter to My Son' is 110 percent true — I'm still going through it," he admitted. "It isn't as bad as it was at first, it's a little better, but I gotta take it one day at a time."

Trip first developed an interest in rapping when he was 11; by 16, he realized he was actually good at it. During his very first studio session, Trip recorded a song in one take, a task that even veteran rappers can find daunting. The Memphis rapper had no doubt he was on to something. Trip soon began distributing his music, personally handing out free mixtapes until he built enough of a buzz to get booked for shows. Eventually, a mutual friend would connect the up-and-coming spitter with production duo Cool & Dre, who took Trip to Interscope earlier this year. There was no denying the appeal of "Letter," but the original version of the song didn't have a chorus. "Jimmy Iovine personally asked for a hook to be added to the record," Trip revealed.

Still, Don was initially reluctant to tamper with his art and argued that the record should stay as is. After some thought, however, he realized the Interscope chairman was right; the MC suggested getting someone soulful, like Cee Lo, for the song. The decision proved to be a good call because the Goodie Mob singer's feature has given "Letter to My Son" a sound that's ripe for radio without losing its emotion and integrity.

Things are definitely looking up for Don these days. He has a bubbling single, a debut album slated for a 2012 release and he's finally getting quality time with his son. And he did it all by following his gut and baring his soul on record.

Trip added, "I feel like that's what music is missing: honesty, especially in rap music."

93% Drive

Driver: If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what.I tend to spend most of my time during a film figuring out what is flawed about it, but every once in a while, I am graced with a film where I can sit down and enjoy every minute of it. That's exactly what I got from Drive, a hyper-violent, gruesome, tense, and throughly entertaining film throughout. Not only was it supremely entertaining, it is also wholly original; as well as a masterful lead from indie-guru Ryan Gosling, stylish direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all contribute to making Drive one of the best films of the year. Ryan Gosling stars as Driver, who spends his days as a Hollywood stunt driver and a worker and a car repair shop. By night, Driver drives (yep, there will be probably hundreds of uses of the word "drive" in this review) criminals to and from their heist. When a heist involving his neighbors husband who was recently released from prison goes wrong, and the criminals find out who Driver really is, it's time for him to take charge of the situation and to do whatever it takes to get payback and stay alive. I guess the first thing I'll talk about is the fact that it in no way is an action film. It is a tense drama that features some strong violence. There are some defining action moments, but this is mostly a slow paced thriller, which was definitely a brilliant aspect pertaining to the film's style. The first hour or so consists only of strong character development, and a lot of leading up to the last forty minutes where a lot of mindless yet awesome action occurs. The action sequences are arranged quite well. The whole film itself has sort of an art house feel to it, and this action seems pretty gritty, and pretty realistic if I may say. Don't mistake this for another Fast and Furious film, this is its own movie, and the action here is something [similar] to what would really happen in a situation like this. The only thing that was over exemplified was the blood, there was a lot of blood. For anyone who enjoys gruesome films, this is right up your alley. Even if you are into superhero movies, this is for you; according to actor Ryan Gosling (found HERE).Speaking of Ryan Gosling, 2011 seems to be the year of Gosling, as he's starred in the hit romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love (my review can be found HERE), and the upcoming Clooney film The Ides of March. He was also in Blue Valentine, The Notebook, and Lars and the Real Girl. Drive is his best film so far. Even judging by the original trailer, you could tell Gosling would be great. He was spectacular. Seeing Gosling's character strolling down the street, blood stains all over his super-cool Scorpion Jacket is a pleasure to watch. The supporting cast are also definitely great too. I'll start with my favorite of them; Albert Brooks, who switched over from his usual good guy character to a bad-ass man-in-charge, and Brooks' performance is masterful, scary, and sheds some blood. Hellboy star Ron Perlman is also a favorite of mine in this, and is a great addition to an already well-picked cast. The film featured other great performances from Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, and Carey Mulligan. The film gets it's amazingly original arthouse style due to the fantastic direction from acclaimed Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, and another Ryan Gosling film Only God Forgives). Nicolas's directing style is wholly unique, and wholly original, as well as wholly entertaining, and wholly beautiful. What I love the most about his directing style, as far as indie films go, was not only his lack of complexity (I mean that in a good way), but his arthouse style was very unique. I was absolutely mesmerized by it; it is almost impossible to describe, you have to see it to believe it.Drive is one of the best experiences I've had watching a film. It's always good when a movie ends, and you realize that it was flawless (as well as giving it a huge round of applause, as my theater did). Drive is a very fun, gory, gruesome, but has a sense of tense drama moments (which basically consists of the entire first hour until the hyper-violent era of the film occurs), as well as a mesmerizing performance from Ryan Gosling, and great direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all make this film that is destined to become a classic.Driver: When you get your money, his debt's paid. He's out for good and you never go near his family again. You understand?
